Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Rounds Get Underway at Weston Lawns Equitation Centre
Monday 11 May 2015
Ninety-four combinations came forward for the first of this year’s Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Rounds, held at Weston Lawns Equitation Centre in Bulkington, Warwickshire on Saturday as part of their Pony Premier Show.
As ever with this popular series, competition was fierce as all ninety-four starters got their Championship Final qualifying campaign underway. Up for grabs at this second round were two direct qualifying places for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show and each starter was vying for one of these coveted spots.
The first two rounds of the class were well fought and fifteen combinations went on to produce the two clear rounds needed to make it through into the final jump off. Spectators were treated to a competitive jump off in which six treble clears were produced and with less than a second separating the top three, the allocation of the Championship places came down to the ever crucial clock.
Fourteen year-old Georgia Taylor-Jones from Porthcawl, Mid Glamorgan was drawn second to go in the final jump off on the 8 year-old grey gelding Kingstown Rebel, owned by Sonya Fitch Peyton and the combination took an early lead after delivering their immaculate treble clear in 38.88 seconds. Their time was to prove good enough for the win with their nearest rivals finishing just over half a second behind them.
Second place was taken by 14 year-old Ryan Lockwood from Marlborough, Wiltshire and he was on board Honest John, a 9 year-old bay gelding owned by his mother Nicola. Ryan and Honest John were drawn third for the jump off order and they also produced a treble clear. The combination stopped the clock on 39.42 seconds and in doing so, they secured a top two finish. .
With the top two taking the direct qualifying tickets for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show, the riders and ponies that finished in third to sixth missed out on Championship qualification this time around. However, they did take home the chance to compete in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
