GB Young Riders Jake Saywell & Abbie Newbery finish 2nd & 3rd in Deauville Grand Prix
Sunday 10 May 2015
This afternoon saw the show at Deauville, France draw to a close with both the Junior and Young Rider squads competing in their respective Grand Prix’s before heading home.
Friday had seen the Young Rider team narrowly miss out on a 1st place finish to home team France during a third and final jump off round in the Nations Cup competition. This afternoon was no different with France and Great Britain once again going head to head in an incredibly tense jump off.
From a field of just over forty competitors it was just two combinations that managed to achieve a clear over the technical and demanding course that had been set for them. For France it was Edward Levy with Starlette de la Roque and for Great Britain 18 year-old Jake Saywell from Nottinghamshire with Cantho Z, a 15 year-old bay gelding owned by Rachel Gascoine.
With Edward having gone first in the jump off and having a fence down in a fast time of 48.65 seconds, Jake took the strategic decision to also keep Cantho moving forward. His round looked set to deliver a clear in what also looked to be an incredibly fast time, however a touch of the last fence saw them incur 4 penalties and they stopped the clock just 0.03 of a second slower in a time of 48.68, which saw them relegated to 2nd place.
Abbie Newbery, aged 20 from Upham, Southampton took 3rd place with her father Tony’s 13 year-old grey gelding Valentino VII. A brilliant round saw them leave all fences untouched in the first round but breaking the finish line less than a second outside the time allowed saw them pick up a time penalty and therefore miss the opportunity of being invited into the jump off. Within the top six in the line up was also Alfie Bradstock and from Wantage, Oxfordshire with Graham Fletcher and KBIS Equestrian Insurance’s 12 year-old bay gelding KBIS Caicos who finished 5th on five penalties in the first round.
For the Young Rider teams it was a case of ‘so near yet so far’ in both the Nations Cup and Grand Prix with both competitions being extremely hard fought. For the Juniors it was definitely mixed fortunes however some solid performances were produced throughout both days with the team all showing depth at this, their first team competition of the year. Highest placed Junior was Carmen Edwards, who celebrated his 18th birthday only the day before, with Bow House Secret, an 11 year-old grey mare owned by his father Carl. The combination took 7th place having produced the fastest round on the least faults (4) in the first round.
