British Showjumping National Championships – Friday's winners

The first champion of the day in Bucas Championship Arena 1 was Moreton-in-Marsh based Rosie Campbell, riding the 12-year-old Appy Du Chalet in the National Children on Horses Championship Final. “It was a great course; I was just focusing on getting around and hoping for a clear. This was his first show back from the Europeans, he had a few well-deserved weeks off then worked hard for this.” Rosie explained.

The next champion who took to Bucas Championship Arena 1 was Oliver Fletcher with Garande in the National Under 21 Championship. The Oxfordshire-based rider noted that he “was not expecting to win with a fence down, but a win is a win, and I’m always happy to take a title. “I was first to go, and I knew I had a couple of quick ones behind me, so I had to take a few gambles and a risk or two. She’s jumping out of her skin at the moment, she’s a lovely mare and I’m really pleased with her. She’s tiny but she’s got a heart of gold. She tries her hardest and I love her to bits.”

Hampshire based Julian Mincher riding DoubleM Carter Rouge took the victory in the National Grade C Championship Final. “He always jumps well, he’s a lovely horse. He was on form! He was 4th in a Grand Prix on Sunday in the 1.45. My season has been great so far, he’s qualified for HOYS in the Talent Seekers, we’ve just missed out on the Foxhunters twice being placed been 3rd and 4th . We’re jumping that on Sunday but whatever he does now I’m happy with him!". Julian continued: "Carter Rouge is a well-bred horse; his mum was Nicky Boulter’s Grand Prix horse. I don’t know his dad but a good French stallion that jumps 1.50/1.60.”

Cardiff-based Mark Edwards riding 9-year-old mare Ede Peasy was crowned champion in the National Grade B Championship Final in UNIBED Championship Arena 2. Mark commented: “It was good, there was only four in the jump off and luckily, I was last to go, so I knew exactly what to do and she did everything asked of her, so I’m really pleased. She’s just turned Grade A so she’s really stepping up now. We’ve had a strong season so far, hopefully we’ll have a bit more success this weekend; I’m hoping to qualify for the international classes for Horse of the Year Show.”

Stepping up to claim the Equissage Pulse Senior British Novice Championship title in Bucas Championship Arena 1 was Bethany Hodgkinson with Tenelick Diamond Rose, known as 'Saffie'. Wary of Saffie’s size compared to the rest of the field, the Lincoln-based rider said: “she felt really good in the ring,” and they’re looking forward to Scope in August and HOYS in October.

Gloucestershire-based James Loffet and Gaudi pulled through to win the National Senior Rider Championship in UNIBED Championship Arena 2. When asked about his round, Loffet said: “it was absolutely awesome, he was so careful. I didn’t have the best shot to one of the fences and he really helped me out.” He is hoping to make the team for the European Championships for Veterans in September.

Closing out the day in UNIBED Championship Arena 2 were the National Para Club Equestrian Classes. Toby Bevins, who rode Baloe V and took the Grade III section said: “I think my round went well! Baloe V - he’s a delight if you’ve got the control.”

West Yorkshire-based competitor Sarah Steel, with Topwood Teddy was winner of the Grade I and said: “it was all a bit of a blur, I was so nervous because it was only his second big show. I’m so happy that he was really good with all the distractions. Ted has taken to my disability like it was his natural job. He never takes advantage of me, and he knows when I’m unwell and he looks after me. He’s just ace.”

To conclude the day in Bucas Championship Arena 1, Reading based Laura Mantel riding Glory B V were crowned champions of the Horse of the Year Show International Wild Card Qualifier Incorporating the National 1.40m Championship after an exciting jump off, which Laura won by 0.5 seconds. “She jumped brilliantly, picking up a place was good enough today! My season has been amazing this year, I’ve been really lucky with some of the rides. I’m going to get the young horse show out the way and see what happens for the rest of the season. A HOYS Wildcard would just top off my year.” Laura explains. “I rode Glory B V, known as 'Cheese' at home, for about 4 years and then stopped riding her for a couple of years before she came back to me about 18 months ago, it’s like we picked up where we started. She’s my princess!” Laura continues.
