British Pony Team finish 3rd in Hagen Nations Cup

It was a hard fought Pony Nations Cup that played out in front of spectators in Hagen, Germany today with may nations hosting their top teams in a bid to take the title. For Great Britain, it was a 3rd place finish with Ireland taking 1st place and Italy 2nd whilst France and the Netherlands took 3rd and 4th place respectively.
The British team, was a relatively inexperienced one in terms of competing at this level, and under the guidance of Chef d’Equipe Matt Lanni they put in a sterling performance to finish high up in the placings.
Allana Clutterbuck (15 years) from Upminster, Essex with Sultan Du Bary a 10 year-old bay gelding owned by Susan Evans was the first to go for the team. An unfortunate touch of a fence in each round saw them return on home on 4 penalties in what was otherwise two extremely solid performances. Emma Crawford from Cupar, Fife with Mullingar Bay an 8 year-old bay gelding owned by Lynn Crawford accrued the same as Allana in the first round when a pole rolled from the cup, their second round saw two down to come through the finish on 8 penalties and become the drop score in second round.
Hallie Lunn (15 years) with Javas Alun from Rochford, Essex with Javas Alun, a 13 year-old piebald mare owned by Richard Anthony delivered two foot-perfect double clears within the time allowed across the testing course that had been built for them. Their double clear was matched by just a handful of others competing within the competition which stands testament to the talent she showed across the course. Last to go Antonia Platt (14 years) from Chelmsford, Essex with the 10 year-old bay gelding Carnhill Luna owned by Rosalind Platt was extremely unfortunate to incure a time penalty in what was otherwise a faultless initial round. Determined not to be caught by the clock again she executed an absolutely brilliant second round to break the finish line clear within the given time which was enough to keep GB high enough in the line-up to relegate a number of the other more experienced teams behind them.
Talking afterwards Matt Lanni said “I am so very pleased with the team today. They are low in experience at this level and to see them come out and finish 3rd in such good company is a testament to the effort they have put in. They were competing under a lot of pressure and it was a difficult course they were faced with. I ‘m really proud of them all”
