Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifiers Kick Off at Nottinghamshire County Show

The first of this year’s Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifiers took place on Sunday 10th May at Nottinghamshire County Show in Newark. The qualifiers got off to a successful start with seventy-one combinations getting their Championship Final qualifying campaign in motion.

All seventy-one of the starters were aiming to take home one of the three sought after direct qualifying tickets for the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show and they were of course aiming to do this with the production of a double clear.

Twenty-four of the starting combinations secured a place in the jump off after putting in a first round clear. The jump off proved to be hard fought and with seven double clears being produced; each rider had the clock in the back of their minds as this was to now determine the allocation of the Championship Final places.

The eventual winners, 25 year-old Joe Clayton from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and Helios, an 8 year-old bay gelding owned by Michael Whitaker, set the pace early on in the jump off after having been drawn tenth to go. Joe knew that four double clears had been produced before him and with this in mind; he ensured that he not only rode a clean round, but also a quick one on board Helios. The combination’s turn of pace saw them cross the finishing beam in 41.22 seconds and this was to prove unbeatable.

Louise Saywell, aged 24, from Retford, Nottinghamshire secured second place with Louise Abba’s 7 year-old bay mare Dienna. Their immaculate double clear in 42.75 seconds proved to be good enough to not only give them a top two finish, but also a Championship Final spot.

Joe cemented a successful day of competition as he also picked up third posiiton with Steve Barnes’ 8 year-old bay gelding Millioninmind. On this occasion, Joe gained the double clear in 43.01 seconds to take the third and final qualifying spot.
