Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds at Tushingham Arena

The Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds continued on Sunday with Tushingham Arena in Whitchurch, Shropshire playing host to the 85cm, 95cm, 1.05m and 1.10m second round classes with all combinations hoping to secure a place at the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool on 12 – 17 November.

Nine of the starting combinations produced a first round clear over Course Designer Paul Wellstead’s eleven fence track and with eight qualifying tickets available it was inevitable that someone would miss out.

Josie Nisbet from Manchester took the first win of the qualifiers with Louise Atkin’s 10 year-old grey mare Tulloch Mhor, whom Josie has ridden for three years. They posted a double clear in 36.19 seconds, 0.3 seconds ahead of Megan Williams and Bonmahon Blue Lee who posted a time of 36.49 seconds.

Course Designer Paul Wellstead set a challenging track for the 95cm Second Round with just seven of the initial starters going through to the jump-off. Six of those went on to keep a clean sheet and produce a double clear.

Annabel Windsor from Oswestry, Shropshire took the win with 1.89 seconds in hand with her own Netherton Z, a 19 year-old Belgian bred bay gelding. The well-formed partnership utilised all of the short routes available to come home in a time of 34.55 seconds pushing Kim Webster and Gift into second place.

Ten combinations managed to produce a first round clear and six of those pulled a double clear out of the bag and secured their place in the final. The remaining two tickets were down to the clock as four of the combinations picked up faults.

Sixteen year-old Rachel Basnett from Deeside, Clywd fought off some strong competition to take the win in the 1.05m Second Round with Sally Basnett’s Sircarno, a 12 year-old British bred bay gelding by Locarno. They posted the fastest round of the class with a double clear in 36.69 seconds. Close behind in the runners up spot was Shannon Sheffield and Judith Mellody’s Contessa M.

Dodson & Horrell 1.10m National Amateur Second Round

Only five combinations managed to jump a clear first round in the 1.10m Second Round and therefore secure their qualifying ticket for the Championships.

Kim Webster from Shrewsbury in Shropshire landed the top spot with her own evergreen gelding Libero Bot II, a 21 year-old German bred whom Kim has competed since 2012. They posted a time of 37.27 seconds edging ahead of Grace Wallace who took both second and third place.
