Camaraderie, team spirit and FUN! This two day event, now in its fourth year creates a unique and enthusiastic atmosphere amongst all. Lucky winners received rugs, sashes, medals and trophies.
Area 25 took the lion’s share with two team gold medals and individual gold, silver and bronze under the guidance of mentor Pat Crann.Lily Freeman-Attwood’s jump-off round on Kitty secured team gold for Area 25 in the mini 70/80cm section, and also gained individual silver “She’s always been easy and loves galloping against the clock” said Lily, 11, on Kitty.
Imogen Marmont, 11, was another double clear with Warleigh Cygnet.“He can be grumpy, but he’s brilliant at dressage and cross country” said South Shropshire Pony Club member Imogen.
Chloe Sutton, 13, rode a double clear on Who Dun Dare. This pair hunt with the North Shropshire, and took Pat Crann’s advice on the course – “Concentrate on canter, the course, and breathe!” Chloe’s sister Faye, 11, was fourth member and is getting to grips with new ride of two weeks Birchills Harmony and is aiming for top level.
Norfolk-based Freya Russell’s daring turns took the mini section individual gold on Ardenteggle Caesar, a 138cm bought in November from Jane Aymes.“We looked all over the country and found the perfect pony four miles away” said Freya, who didn’t like him at first.“The harder I pulled to stop the faster he went, but he’s got a sensitive mouth, and now I love everything about him.”
The maxi section also fell to Area 25. Gold was secured by anchor Olivia Poole’s fast jump-off round on The Jacaloupe, also earning individual bronze. Olivia was second in Hickstead’s recent 138cm final and now targets HOYS. She also clinched individual gold on her children-on-horses European team ride Andorra in the grown-ups section, winning with confidence and flair.
Maxi team-mate Archie Rees, 13, only began riding two years ago, but produced a triple clear with Jessy Wonder. “This academy is brilliant, I’ve had the best time” he said. Danielle Brown has gelled with Brooklands Dun Dreamer, a pony originally ridden by her sister Anya. “He was too sharp at first” said Danielle, who took the ride on 12 months ago.
Callum Linning, 15, rode Harriet Beresford’s four-year-old Cwmcynwal Ladybird. “She’s talented with the head of a 10-year-old” he said.
Kristy Colclough of Staffordshire Area 22 took the maxi section individual gold on Midnight Madam.“She is so fast but has done little lately as I’ve concentrated on my other ponies” said Kristy.
An all-conquering Hampshire Area 43 claimed the Mature Maxi team gold on zero. Max Kment cemented his five week partnership with Emeraude. “She’s completely different to my last pony, I have to sit still because she’s bouncy and takes me to the fence” he said.
Eliza Dubois, 14, credited mentor Kim Clarke to harmonising with Rosewall Hi Flyer, a ride of nine months. “Kim tells me to keep her level, it’s the canter that matters more than the jump.”
Grace Turnbull, 14, acquired Teasel three years ago. “He’s quirky, but loving” she said about the former event pony.
Emma Holmes jumped treble clear with No Regrets, a six-year-old bought via Kim Clarke. “He’s got a big jump and loads of potential.” Kim was very proud of her teams. “They’ve all been very supportive and worked as a team, I’m very proud” she said.
Sophie Palmer and Ballyduff Bobby took this section’s individual gold. “I clicked with him straightaway” said Sophie, 14, who finished fourth in the 2012 Hickstead JC, “Now I want to compete at HOYS and Olympia.”
Scotland snatched the Grown-ups section thanks to the super-quick jump-off round of Isla Gumley on Magic Flight. She was joined by Isla Mowat on Millthyme Cameo, Rowan Ball with Bon Ami V and Victoria Lillington’s Captain Jack.
