Max Routledge and Carus Royale Speed to Victory

Today, the greatly anticipated first leg of the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) International Wild Card Series took place in the Andrews Bowen Indoor Arena in the shape of the National 1.40m Championship. The audience was expecting to see some exciting top class competition and the Championship did not disappoint.

It was Max Routledge riding Carus Royale who emerged the winner after a spectacular competition that saw 40 competitors battle to get one step closer to HOYS. The first round saw a number of exciting rounds with a total of 11 combinations moving on to the jump off.

The first to take on the jump off was Douglas Duffin riding Quidam B-Z. The pair stylishly completed a clear round with a time of 40.27 laying down the challenge to the remaining riders. The atmosphere was electric as spectators sensed the increasing tension as one rider after another produced quick and clean rounds.

The moment Max Routledge and Carus Royale stepped into the arena it was clear that the audience was in for a thrill ride. Max’s adrenaline fuelled round had everyone on the edge of their seats as the pair raced around the course executing tight turns and dramatic jumps finishing on a clear round with an impressive time of 34.69.

With only 3 combinations to follow the pressure was on as each rider attempted to catch Max and Carus Royale. In the end no one could come close to the pair who secured the title.

Max has only been riding Carus Royale for one year and managed to take on the ride from previous jockey, Charlotte Flack. Carus Royale is a serious multidiscipline talent being that he started out as an eventer with Team GBR event rider Francis Whittington.

Max was thrilled with the win saying it feels “awesome, I think he jumped really well”. The desired end result is a HOYS ticket and even with their spectacular performance this evening Max is quietly confident they are potential contenders for the one of the three tickets on offer. “It’s a long way to go but it’s definitely a good place to start”.

The next leg of the HOYS Wild Card International Wild Card Series takes place tomorrow evening in the Andrews Bowen Indoor Arena and is a Speed Round. After tonight’s performance it can’t be denied that Max and Carus Royale are in hot contention “normally, touch wood, going quick doesn’t affect him any different. Hopefully he’ll be quick again tomorrow”

Max wasn’t the only winner in tonight’s thrilling class; Kerry Brennan riding Wellington M was crowned the National 1.40m Champion. Although the class of 40 riders all competed together only 12 of those coming forward were eligible for the National 1.40m Championship. Kerry jumped an effortless first round to secure her jump off place with a time of 68.63. In the jump off the pair jumped a clear round to finish on a time of 37.54 finishing second to Max.
