Faye Adams and her trustworthy partner Demograaf returned to one of their favourite venues to take victory in the Le Mieux 3* 1.40m in fine style at Bolesworth International in Cheshire.
“He loves the big occasion; I think he likes to show off and he loves going fast,” said Faye.
Sixty-five competitors tackled Spanish course-designer Javier Trenor Paz’s two-phase track and it was hot and competitive. No-one was a match for Faye and seasoned campaigner Demograaf as the Quasimodo x Serville 15-year-old galloped into the top spot by only 0.21 seconds, leaving Joe Trunkfield and Greenacres Vanquish in second place.
Faye and Demograaf claimed a victory double at this glorious venue two years ago and the eager Dutch-bred gelding showed he’s still got it.
“It was difficult to do something different as most riders followed the same route and there were plenty of inside turns and related distances which restricted any galloping. I got a forward stride from the plank to the oxer and to the double, but he’s so careful I can trust him to verticals. The final line caused a lot of problems and faults but I’d made up time early on, so brought him back for the final line to clear the problem verticals,” explained Faye. “Demi’s naturally very quick, ‘land and move’ is our mantra and he’s so quick away from a fence.”
The competitions were fiercely contended as Emma Stoker headed day one’s Hird & Partners 3* 1.35m two-phase on Q Seven, the FRH Quaid x Stakkato 10-year-old edging ahead by 0.12 seconds.
Similarly, Rachel Proudley claimed only 0.12 seconds in hand as she eased ahead of her 48 rivals to take the 1* FMBs Therapy Systems 1.30m two-phase aboard Susan Lincoln’s Kannan 15-year-old Happy Boy.
Nicole Lockhead Anderson continued with the ‘Girl power’ theme, getting her campaign off to a flying start on Tom Williams’ Conthargo PS (Conthargos x Centadel) with victory in the 50-strong Natural Flake Woodshavings 7-year-old 1.30m two-phase by 0.89 seconds.
Phillip Spivey found the shortest route on the Billy Mexico x Billy Congo 7-year-old Billy Foxtrot to top the 71-horse AC Jackson 1* 1.25m by 0.34 seconds.
Will Edwards scored a 0.54 second win in day one’s Dallamires Stables 55-entry 5-year-old 1.15m two-phase. He guided Alan Thomas and Gail Burchmore’s No Strings Attached (Halifax Van Het Kluizebos x Vigaro) into victory at the expense of William Walker’s Jirostar.
The results were reversed 24 hours later, William and the Big Star x Super De Bourriere mare edging ahead of Will in the 54-strong 1.15m two-phase by 0.13 sec.
Declan Irvine landed day one’s 60-horse Al Shira’aa 6-year-old 1.25m two-phase by 0.19 seconds on RB Emerald Elite (Emerald Van’t Ruytershof x Pinnochio).
The Irish contingent were on top form to nab several wins. Jonathan Smyth seized victory in the 3* HM3 Legal 1.45m on the Luidam 13-year-old Mulvin Lui, forging ahead by 2.30 seconds, pushing Emma Stoker’s Daisy into second.
Thursday’s 3* Hird & Partners 1.35m also fell to Ireland despite several serious challenges, Sven Hadley winning by the tiny fraction of 0.08 seconds on Fabuleu V/D Watertoren over Annabel Shields and Elgrando PS. Niamh McEvoy also scored for the Emerald Isle, beating 58 competitors by 0.40 seconds to the top spot of Thursday’s Al Shira’aa 6-year-old on BP Tiny Dancer.
Alex Bragg claimed over five seconds in hand over his 33 rivals in the JCL Insurance Eventers Grand Prix with the 13-year-old mare Quindiva, pushing Gemma Stevens’ Santiago into second. Alex was also part of the winning JCL Insurance Brokers squad in the Eventing Grand Prix Teams competition. Anchor Alex sealed the deal for teammates Andrew Downes on Cooley Foxtrot, Arthur Doffort with JSC Bucketlist and pathfinder Kristina Hall-Jackson aboard Juela to claim a three-penalty winning advantage with more than 10 seconds to spare.
