Each of the second rounds were well contested and each of the starters were aiming to collect one of the twelve direct qualifying places on offer for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships, which take place at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool during the 19th – 23rd November 2014.

Dodson & Horrell 0.85cm National Amateur Second Round.
This second round proved to be popular and was contested by sixty-four starters. A total of thirty-three competitors made it through to an ultra-competitive jump off, in which sixteen double clears were delivered. This meant that the times achieved were to prove absolutely crucial in deciding the allocation of the qualification places.

Victory in this second round was taken by 18 year-old Sophie Corney from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire who produced the fastest double clear of the class on board her own 18 year-old bay mare, Ocean Breeze II. Drawn twentieth to go in the jump off, the combination produced a blistering round to secure their double clear in a brilliant time of 32.69 seconds and in doing so, they ensured that they could not be beaten.

Helen Swailes, aged 29, from Haswell, County Durham set a good pace early on in this second round after being drawn sixth to go on With Pleasure, a 12 year-old chestnut mare owned by Sam McNicholas. The combination not only delivered a double clear, but they did so in 33.29 seconds and this was to be good enough to secure second place.

Third was taken by 16 year-old Dominic McFarlane from King’s Lynn, Norfolk and he was on Stormhill Barndance, a 19 year-old bay mare owned by Sylvia McFarlane. Their double clear in 33.38 seconds ensured that they took their place in the top three.

A further nine riders also achieved their qualification for the Dodson & Horrell 0.85cm National Amateur Championship Final.

Dodson & Horrell 0.95cm National Amateur Second Round.
Fifty-five combinations came forward for this second round and once again, spectators were treated to a hot jump off in which thirty-one jumped. Fourteen of these combinations secured a double clear, leaving it up to the clock to decide who the qualifications places went to.

The fastest double clear of the class was delivered by 23 year-old Amy Jones from Walcott, Lincolnshire with her own 12 year-old chestnut mare Lady Casablanca Helena. The combination was drawn as the twentieth to go in the jump off and having seen some strong rounds produced before them, they knew that only a quick double clear would put them in contention for a qualifying place. They duly delivered this result by bagging their double clear in 36.53 seconds and this also saw them take the top spot.

Second place went to 26 year-old Jenna King from Walsall in the West Midlands and she took her place in the top two on Luckey IV, an 8 year-old chestnut gelding owned by Anthony Wallbank. Drawn early on in the jump off, the combination’s pace was such that they could only be beaten by one other pairing. Their double clear was secured in 37.65 seconds.

Gemma Dickens, aged 33, from Loughborough, Leicestershire took third on Helms Tolu, a 15 year-old bay mare owned by Julia Helm. This combination also secured a double clear early on in the jump off and they crossed the line in 37.68 seconds.
