BRITISH YOUNG HORSE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013
Monday 19 August 2013
The British Young Horse Championships, a showcase for British breeders and producers, held its eighth annual event over a successful four days.
William Funnell won two championships for the Billy Stud team. Billy Yen, a mare by Cevin Z and out of a Kannan mare, was best British-bred five-year-old in an 11 horse jump-off. “I rode her here and at Hickstead, but Lucy Bunn deserves the credit for most of the work, I only rode her because she’s one of the bigger ones” said William.
His new ride Clooney II, a scopey grey with Clarimo and Contender bloodlines, took the non British-bred six-year-old. “He has everything I look for, blood, good brain, careful and consistent, I really like him” said William, “I may turn him away now and bring him back as a seven-year-old.” Billy Stud had 26 horses competing here. “It’s a team effort, we all work together” said William before heading off to get ready for his flight to Denmark where he will be representing Great Britain at the European Championships with another home bred horse, Billy Congo.
Laura Renwick took the seven-year-old title in a hotly contested jump-off with Bintang II whom is owned by both herself and husband John. It earned a £2,000 half share of the bonus, given to horses jumping clear throughout the show, and a place in the Horse of the Year Show Talentseekers final.“He has a great attitude, he missed a lot of his six-year-old year because I was so busy, but it hasn’t affected him” said Laura. The son of Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve, bred in Devon by Edward Bleekman of Whorridge Stud, was bought two years ago from Neil Fiddes and is also in the Horse and Hound Foxhunter final.
Phillip Miller took second on the 7 year old bay gelding Basic, which is jointly owned by Diana and Pennie Cornish, to also gain a HOYS Talentseekers finalist place.
Laura’s stable jockey Emily Mason clinched the non British Bred five-year-old championship on Washington IX. The Irish sport horse by OBOS quality 004 and out of a Heartbreaker mare is owned jointly by John Renwick and Denis Lynch. “Emily has been with us almost three years, is a great worker and has done all the work with this one” said Laura.
Brendon Stud claimed a 2013 title with the British Bred six-year-old with their homebred Sebastians Dream with regular rider Louise Pavitt in the saddle. Louise, who rode 11 here, is back to form since giving birth to son Connor just twelve weeks ago, and this was no exception, winning with a four sec margin. “I couldn’t so it without my mum Sandra, she’s chief babysitter!” said Louise.
Sebastians Dream has only just jumped out of newcomers, but wasn’t fazed by London 2012 course designer Bob Ellis’ substantial track.“She is so straight and very sweet” said Louise on the mare by Sebastian III – an International winner for Scott Brash, who bought him from Brendon Stud – and out of a Special Graf mare.
British Bred four-year-olds showed their European counterparts the way in the final. Nine bred in Britain gained double clears to share first place, compared to six non British bred.
Addington Manor proprietor and show organiser Tim Price summed up by saying “The jumping has been fantastic over the four days and it is fabulous to see horses coming back and showing improvement” he said.
