Malcolm Wharton CBE appointed Interim Chairman

The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) announce today that Malcolm Wharton CBE, who has held the post of Chairman of the BEF Council since 2018, has accepted the role of BEF Interim Chairman with immediate effect and has stepped down from his role as Chair of the BEF Council.

Alongside an alignment with equestrianism, Malcolm has a long sporting history with Rugby having played for Sidmouth, Exeter and Launceston. He also represents England Colleges on the Rugby Football Union (RFU) Council and has been a Director of the RFU since 2013 as well as Chairman of the Rugby Football Foundation.

Former Principal of Hartpury College, a post he held for twenty-two years, he was furthermore part of the management team that established Duchy College, the first new agricultural college in the UK for thirty years.  Awarded a CBE for Services to Education in 2012, Malcolm actively supports those in the education and sports sectors to develop their full potential.

Malcolm has also been involved in the organisation and running of major equestrian events including the World Para-Dressage Championships in 2007.  He is also a trustee of the British Eventing Charitable Trust as well as Vice President for Riding for the Disabled.

On his appointment Malcolm said “It’s an honour to be asked to take on this role. There is a lot of work to be done and I am looking forward to getting on with it and building on the progress already made by the Board over the last two years.”

The BEF also announce that Iain Graham will continue to hold the post of Interim Chief Executive Officer until the 31st December 2020.  This will assist with the ongoing stability of the Federation  during the current Olympic Cycle and with the 2024 UK Sport Submission.
