GB Finish joint 2nd in CSIO 5* Nations Cup, Gijon

Saturday 29 August 2015

It was a joint 2nd place finish for GB and Ireland in the CSIO5* Furusiyya Nations Cup at Gijon, Spain this afternoon under the guidance of World Class Performance Manager, Di Lampard.

France took the honours on the podium with their overall 4 penalty finish whilst both GB and Ireland sat one fence behind them on 8 penalties.  Last week’s double-gold medallists at the European Championships in Aachen, The Netherlands, finished a fence behind on 12 penalties  to slot into 4th place.

Team GB
It was a relatively new team competing in spain today for GB with Keith Shore from Northwich, Cheshire and his own bay gelding Mystic Hurricane taking the role of pathfinder. Winner of the British Masters earlier this summer, it was an unfortunate 8 penalty finish for them in both rounds which saw them become the drop score in Round 2.

Robert Bevis from Wrexham, Clwyd with his own consistent 14 year-old grey gelding  Courtney Z delivered a superb double clear within the time allowed to post a zero penalty score in each round.  Their performance was very quickly mirrored by Joe Clayton, from Huddersfield with Simon Davies’ 9 year-old grey gelding Velini who put in a foot-perfect clear in each round to come home on a zero score.

Anchor rider, Laura Renwick with Colin Bates’ Heliodor Hybris, an 8 year-old chestnut gelding incurred a 16 penalty finish in the first round to become the drop score. However their return for the second round saw them produce a brilliant clear enabling GB to finish on just their 8 penalty total from the first round.

Talking from Las Mestas Sports Centre in Gijon, Di Lampard commented ‘Today has been a great competition and all of the horses have really stepped up to the plate.  To have five clear rounds out of eight is quite something especially when all the horses are still finding their feet at this level. There was less than a handful of double clears achieved today and two of them were from our team.  I’m delighted”.

The Grand Prix takes place on Monday 31st August at 13:00 hours local time.
