Gwen Davies Claims First STX-UK Pony British Novice Final Place at Pyecombe

The first STX-UK Pony British Novice Second Round of the season took place at Pyecombe Horse Show at the weekend, where 17 rider and pony combinations came forward to contest a competitive class over a technical track designed by John Farrell.
With the pressure on and a coveted place in the final up for grabs, it was Gwen Davies who produced the standout performance of the class aboard Meleri Morgan’s Vox Pop. The pair delivered three confident clear rounds before stopping the clock in an impressive 38.83 seconds in the jump-off to secure victory.
Their win means Gwen has now booked her place at the British Showjumping National Championships this August, where she will contest the STX-UK Pony British Novice Championship Final against the best qualified combinations from across the country.
Finishing in second place was Megan Cornwell with Glenlo Clonark Secret Shadow. Also jumping clear in every round, the combination posted a strong time of 42.30 seconds to claim the runner-up position after a polished performance.
The opening second round of the season proved to be a fantastic start to the championship campaign, with riders showing great determination and skill as they look to progress through the summer season.
“This was our first time jumping a second round. Vox Pop or Smartie as we call him at home, was really good, he’s 20 years old, and I think this was the first time he’s also jumped this class.
“We’re looking forward to heading to the British Showjumping National Championships, as we’ve only been before for the Schools classes, so we’ll be focusing on our training ahead of August. Smartie is just brilliant. We’ve had him for almost a year now, and he’s really helped me grow in confidence after I lost some with another pony.” Gwen said.
With the first qualifying ticket now claimed, attention will turn to the remaining second rounds as more young riders aim to secure their place in the championship final later this year.
