Tony Pearson lands victory in the Nupafeed Supplements Senior Discovery Second Round at Pyecombe Horse Show

Tony Pearson beats the odds to win the Nupafeed Supplements Senior Discovery Second Round with catch ride Maybe Ratina at Pyecombe Horse Show in Sussex.

The seven-year-old Comme Il Faut daughter is owned by breeders Kerry Grimster and Paul Kelly with Maidenhead, Berkshire-based Tony occasionally taking the ride.

“Kerry and Paul were busy at Bishop Burton Pony Premier so, as I was already going to Pyecombe for this class, I picked her up this morning,” said Tony, who achieved the final double clear to qualify for this second round as the mare was close to the limit on points.

An entry of 60 riders came forward over course-designer Mark McGowan’s 1.10m track with 36 achieving their initial aim of a clear to access round two. These were further reduced to 28 for a fast and exciting jump-off. With 17 registering treble clears, the clock played a major role.

Tony got his eye in early in the jump-off with his first ride.

“I was the fastest but had a fence down and had intended jumping a treble clear with her [Ratina], but she jumped the first two fences really well so I kept going, took out a stride down a distance, got a tight inside turn and took out a stride to the last,” said Tony, who recorded a 0.62 second win.

“I took seven strides to the last and Sophie [Slater, second] went on eight, that’s where I won it.  She’s super-easy and straight, big enough with plenty of scope and quality.”

Tony will take the ride in the Nupafeed Supplements Senior Discovery Final.

“I’ve got three qualified for the Final and I’ll ride her for a bit now before the final,” added Tony, who has longer term plans – “We’ll possibly travel out to Portugal at the end of the year for the show in Vilamoura.”

Sophie Slater slipped Springwood Du Carel into second and Barry Drea finished third on Okehurst Mr Smooth.
