Steve Garrod races to a win in the British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Horse of the Year Show Qualifier at Ashby Show
Tuesday 11 July 2023
Steve Garrod seized victory in the British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Horse of the Year Show Qualifier at Ashby-de-la-Zouch Show, Leicestershire, with Ufonzo.
“He’s evented to four-star level but, because of the extortionate costs of eventing now, we’ve switched him to showjumping as he’s such a good jumper,” said Steve.
Thirty-eight competitors faced course-designer David Cole’s 11-fence 1.35m track with 16 finding the key to access the jump-off. Steve got the edge, guiding the Uvolinus x Onze Fons 14-year-old gelding into the top spot by 0.62 seconds.
Coalville, Leicestershire-based farrier Steve bought Ufonzo from Neil Fiddes as a 4-year-old.
“At the beginning, he wasn’t in our budget and he was sent to Ireland and put through the sales, but later we got a call from Neil to ask if we were still interested,” said Steve. “He’s been spooky all his life but he’s taken me to places I only ever dreamed of in eventing and now HOYS. He’s come close to qualifying but just missed out before, I’m over the moon he’s got where he deserves to be.”
Michaela Scott eased the 7-year-old Eddie G Z (Echo Van’t Spieveld x Jodokus) into second place to add to their HOYS newcomers ticket. Derek Morton briefly borrowed the ride back on the Silvano x Puissance 8-year-old Hereabouts from Ryan Page to take the third qualifying place.
