The award ceremonies for the South West region Intro League 2008/2009, in association with Kathryn Pearn Media took place at the Hand Equestrian Centre and at the Area 51 (Cornwall) AGM where the winning riders received rosettes, plaques, KP Media numnahs and prizes from the John Whitaker International range generously supported by Sara George of HorseHeaven Saddlery.
For a second year, nine-year-old Tara Byrtt from Somerset, secured the top slot on the junior 70cms and 80cms tables. Tara held onto the 70cms title with Oak Deborah and clinched the 80cms league table with Coco Can. She was thrilled with her prizes including a John Whitaker International pony rug and ear muffs sponsored by HorseHeaven Saddlery.
“I can’t thank Sara and Kathryn enough,” said Tara. “Kathryn knew my greatest wish was to win a sash and she had a special one made for me with my name on it!” It capped a good season for Tara who helped the English team clinch team silver at the Scottish Home Pony 2009 championships.

“We picked up the majority of our points at Badgworth and Rockhampton,” said Adele who works part-time for Axa Insurance.
Somerset-based seniors Tilia Winstone (Poolmoor Dark Star) and Julie Milkins (Penywrolod Dawnridge Duke) also finished on equal points in the 80cms league while Sally Jobson Scott from Devon retained the one metre title for a third year with Follyfoot Trenawin Lillenor.
Sharing the 80cms title was Sarah Wakeham and her consistent campaigner Fading Grey who also topped the 90cms table, “Fading Grey’s my horse of a lifetime,” said the Devon-based primary school teacher, “I’ve had him since he was six-years-old - he’s now 23. We’ve won about 15 classes this year from 80cm to 1.05m. It’s super to receive this recognition.”
Shelley Alexandra from Devon also shared the 80cms league on her 14.2hh pony Betty Bug who was sadly lost to colic this year. This 18-year-old mare had found her way into the hearts of all those who knew her and the Betty Bug fan club consisting of Shelley’s parents Ashley and Tracey (Eames), nana Shirley, Jan Potts, Pam Gascoigne and previous owner Angela Love travelled to the Hand in support of this charismatic pony.
Cornish juniors Kayla Setford (Llangeitho Valoir), Sasha Aghdam (October) and Edward Sampson (Wave Rebel) winners of the 90cms and one metre leagues received their awards closer to home at the Area 51 (Cornwall) Annual General Meeting.
