ROYAL WINDSOR HORSE SHOW FRIDAY
Friday 15 May 2015
Her Majesty The Queen’s glorious back garden again played host to the magical Windsor Horse Show. Entertainment included The Musical Drive of The King’s Troops Royal Horse Artillery, The Musical ride of the Household Cavalry, Skill at Arms and tent pegging, the Shetland Pony Grand National, tradestands galore for plenty of retail therapy, International dressage starring Carl Hester and Nip Tuck, showing, and of course, International showjumping.
Britain’s leading lady rider Laura Renwick took the Manama Speed Stakes by a commanding two sec with John Renwick’s bay mare Ulievka De Breve.
“She came here for more experience and has all the scope and a good attitude, she’s coped well with moving up a level this year,” said Laura on the seven-year-old selle Francais mare and another carrying Laura’s favoured ‘de Breve’ suffix.
By Toulon and out of a Le Tot De Semilly mare, Ulievka, a double winner in Vilamoura and placed more recently in France at the Le Touquet and Maubeuge meetings, impressed Laura and husband John as a three-year-old.
“She has the blood and breeding, a very nice, quality mare, she really caught my eye and ticks all the boxes for a top horse,” said Laura.
Robert Smith slotted his own 13-year-old bay gelding Candy Boy into second for a British one-two.
British-based Irishman Billy Twomey headed the Bahrain Pearl Stakes for Ireland on the 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse stallion Ardcolum Duke by 0.31 sec.
The best of the British were bunched lower down the line. Yazmin Pinchen took fifth on her mother Nancy’s eye-catching 12-year-old liver chestnut stallion Van De Vivaldi some four sec behind the winner. The great John Whitaker with Tequestrian’s 10-year-old grey stallion Castlefield Crisobal 21 were just behind finishing on four penalties in a fast time. Tim Gredley and Unex Comptition Yard’s 10-year-old bay gelding Unex Arantos stood seventh, also on four faults in the jump-off.
Danny McGlynn, riding for Team Harmony and Princess Haya, topped the CSI1* Land Rover Stakes 1.35m on the 15 year-old chestnut gelding Atletico Van D’Abelendreef, and also took fourth with the nine-year-old brown mare Ghana.
“Ghana was pacemaker, I kept tight everywhere but didn’t go crazy,” said Dan, who watched Harry Charles, 15 son of 2012 Olympic gold medallist Peter, take a brief lead.
Dan, however, was not to be outdone, and pushed on with the Belgian-bred 15-year-old chestnut gelding Atletico van D’Abelendreef.
“Harry was quick, I had to let the handbrake off,” said Dan, who gained victory by 0.35 seconds to record his first win at Windsor. “The weather was good and the ground was perfect, this is a fantastic show.”
Jordan Marshall, 17, undeterred by Thursday’s rain, headed the opening Thames Speed Stakes aboard Unique XXV a 14-year-old bay mare by Le Tot De Semilly owned by John Sillett.
Julian Mincher gained another national championship, taking the Walwyn novice title with Darren and Samantha Middleton’s consistent 7 year-old bay stallion Dartbreaker.
The seven-year-old Heartbreaker stallion, who will be available for AI stud duties through Select Stallions this year, gained the Halsall Electrical 1.25m final at the Blue Chip championships earlier this year and has also qualified for the Horse of the Year Show talentseekers final.
The Billy Stud gave a shout for British breeding, taking three of the first five places here. William and wife Pippa were second and third on two Cevin Z seven-year-olds, Billy McCain and Billy Anderson, and Lucy Bunn claimed fifth aboard the Billy Congo sired six-year-old Billy Fraulein.
