Robert Murphy Scoops Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round at Bishop Burton College
Thursday 16 July 2015
Sixty-eight starters contested the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round at the Pony Premier Show at Bishop Burton College Beverley, East Yorkshire and it was Robert Murphy and Shannonbay Extra who took the top spot.
With just two direct qualifying places available for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show, each rider was focused on producing a treble clear as they knew that this would give them the best chance of taking one of the coveted qualification spots for their very own.
Following two tough rounds of competition, five combinations were able to produce that all important third clear, but with just the two Championship Final places on offer, all eyes were on the ever crucial clock.
Robert Murphy, aged 14, from Preston, Lancashire was the fastest over the jump off course on Shannonbay Extra, an 8 year-old bay mare owned by Richard Lunn. The combination laid down a treble clear in 34.76 seconds, a result which was to prove unbeatable.
Second place was taken by 16 year-old Jessica Hewitt from Pontefract, West Yorkshire and she secured this position on Wildwood Silver, a 9 year-old grey gelding owned by Lynn Barker. Jessica delivered her immaculate third round in 36.23 seconds.
With the top two taking the direct qualifying tickets for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show, the riders and ponies that finished in third to fifth missed out on their Championship Final qualification this time around. They did however take home the chance to compete in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
