Nicola Barry takes victory in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Round at SouthView Competition and Training Centre

Leicestershire’s Nicola Barry achieved a 2018 target with victory in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Round at SouthView Competition and Training Centre on Be Caprivi.

Seventy-two contended course-designer Raf Suarez’s 12-fence track with the eighteen first round clears halved to nine for the third and final jump-off. But jumping took precedence here as only two riders provided treble clears to fill the two coveted HOYS qualifying places.

Seventh-drawn Nicola was the first to provide a clean round with her own Be Caprivi, a 6-year-old gelding by Balloon bought from Hickstead-based Shane Breen last September.

“He’s the easiest horse I’ve ever sat on, he doesn’t spook, he’s brave and super-careful,” said Nicola. Last to go Elizabeth Forrester knew she had to go clear to qualify with her own 8-year-old stallion Furst Bismark and duly delivered to finish 2.51 seconds in arrears for second place.

The riders and horses placed third to fifth qualify for the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
