Katie Woods Young Wins Haygain Pony Discovery Second Round at Tillyoch Equestrian Centre

Under a cloudy sky at Tillyoch Equestrian Centre in Milltimber, Aberdeen yesterday, 13 year-old Katie Woods Young jumped to victory in the Haygain Pony Discovery Second Round on board Apache Joe, owned by Margaret Young.

The class began with a strong field all hoping to secure one of the ten qualification places available for the Championship Final, which will be held at the British Showjumping National Championships in August. During the first two rounds the competitors were whittled down until it was left to just two valiant combinations to do battle for the top spot against the clock.

Drawn first to go in the final jump off, Katie from Banchory, Kincardineshire took the challenge in her stride and held the 10 year old appaloosa gelding, Apache Joe, together to produce a precise and speedy round. This pair crossed the finish line on their treble clear score in 31.04 seconds.

Second place went to 15 year-old Caroline Cook from West Lothian, Scotland riding Norman Cook’s 13 year-old bay mare Dow Wilma. As the only other combination in the jump off, this pair fought hard and also posted a treble clear. Their time of 33.04 seconds saw them slip into second place.

Fourteen year old Callie Lorimer from Balmedie, Aberdeenshire took third place as the fastest four faulter in the second round. Riding Ballacurra Belle, a 9 year-old grey mare owned by David Lorimer, Callie had an unlucky pole down at the final fence to come home in a time of 43.57 seconds.
