Hickstead's Wednesday Round-Up !

12 year old Millie Allen riding Herbies Double Trouble won the Oakley Coachbuilders Winter Grade JC Championship, having sat on the pony for the first time the previous day. Millie’s friend Amy Inglis had qualified the pony but was unable to ride in today’s Championship because she was competing at the Pony European Championships at Bishop Burton. This doesn’t seem to phase the Allen family, as older sister Pippa won the same class in similar circumstances four years ago.

The pony classes followed in quick succession, next on the list was the Claydon Horsewalkers Winter 128cms Championship. Winner Emily Ward managed to squeeze this showjumping championship in before dashing to a working hunter class. After her success today with Rockingham Shadow, this pony won the same class last year but with a different rider, Emily was keen to point out that showjumping was definitely her favourite discipline. It was Emily’s first time in the International Arena and was thrilled with the whole experience.

The whole Ward family were ecstatic with 14 year old Darby’s win in the Winter 138cms Championship riding More Than Milton. Having qualified the pony at South View, Darby’s dad promised her a new jacket if she won at Hickstead, so it’s off to the shops for Darby!

A first time visit for 19 year old Greg Taylor from Falkirk proved a great success when he took the British Showjumping Business Partnership Winter Novice Championship in fine style, riding Dutchman 38. Greg took over the ride of this former dressage horse just eight months ago, the horse itself has only been show jumping for just over a year and they have already qualified for the Foxhunter at Horse of the Year Show. ‘Unbelievable I was just pleased to jump in the International Arena, I trust that horse and rely on it so much it was great’, commented a delighted Greg.

In an extremely fast jump off Nicky Boulter riding 8 year old Super Trooper De Ness proved triumphant in the Russells Catering Winter Grade B & C Championship. It is the second consecutive year this combination have won the class. Nickys second ride Ja Waher was 5th, both horses are owned by Old Lodge who are based in Ashdown Forest and have been tremendous supporters of Hickstead for a number of years
