Fraser Reed Wins Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round at Bishop Burton Arena

Fraser Reed and Jiminy Cricket outpaced all their rivals to head the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round to gain access to the coveted Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final held at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) final in October.

A big field of seventy-four ponies and riders contended the first round, with thirty providing initial clears. But these were further whittled down over a raised track in the second round to achieve eleven combinations chasing the two HOYS qualifying tickets on offer.

As a late-drawn fifteen year-old Fraser from St Andrews, Fife had all the answers, guiding the 13 year-old Irish-bred gelding, a pony he has ridden for 18 months, into the top spot with 1.05 seconds in hand.

Fifteen year-old Nicole Kershaw from Manchester took second with the 8-year-old grey gelding Miami Moonbeam, but this consistent pairing has already gained both HOYS Newcomer and Foxhunter qualification at Sparsholt and Bicton respectively, and so qualification was passed down the line.

A delighted Emma Crawford aged 16 years from Cupar, Fife took third and that special, yearned-for HOYS pass on Mullingar Bay, an Irish-bred 8-year-old gelding.  It was third time lucky for the pair – they had just missed out on HOYS twice, taking fourth both times in previous competitions.

Eight ponies and riders posted treble clears to qualify for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomer Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships, Stoneleigh, in August, for another bid at qualifying for HOYS.
