Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds at Eland Lodge Equestrian

Eland Lodge Equestrian in Ashbourne, Derbyshire was one of three centres across the country to host the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur 85cm, 95cm, 1.05m and 1.10m Second Rounds this weekend. Competitors braved the weather to take their chance to qualify for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool on 12 – 17 November.

Five of the initial starting combinations produced a clear around Nick Staines’ ten fence first round track with four going on to keep a clean slate and all five combinations gaining their qualification places.
Georgina Beeson from Grindley, Staffordshire is no stranger to winning second rounds. She won both the 85cm and the 95cm National Amateur second rounds at Aintree Equestrian Centre last weekend and went on to win the 85cm this weekend with Barbara Beeson’s 13 year-old Irish bred mare Jazzy Footwork. They finished 3.81 seconds ahead of second placed Ellie Bates with her own In The Limelight III, a 9 year-old Irish bred gelding who completed in 34.50 seconds.

Nine of the initial starters managed to negotiate Nick Staines’ first round track to come through into the jump-off and it was all eyes on the clock as seven produced a double clear to secure their place in the final but it came down to the wire for the final ticket as the two four faulters battled it out.
The on-form Staffordshire based Georgina Beeson claimed her second win of the day, again with Barbara Beeson’s Jazzy Footwork. They produced their winning round in 34.75 seconds, 0.95 seconds quicker than Sophie Rushton and her own Penhills Ginger Biscuit who finished in 35.70 seconds.

Ten combinations in the 1.05m kept their hopes of qualifying for the finals alive when they jumped a first round clear over Nick Staines’ 10 fence track. Eight kept a clean sheet and in doing so secured their spot in the final.
Sixteen year-old Barnie Brotherton from Pershore, Worcestershire piloted Naomi Brotherton’s Cash Casino, a 10 year-old Danish bred gelding whom Barnie has competed over the last twelve months. They topped a tight leaderboard in 34.06 seconds whilst Mark Thompson took second and third place with Silvarno and Hunky Dory III respectively. He produced two quick rounds with just 0.60 seconds separating the top three.

A total of six combinations progressed into the 1.10m second round jump-off designed by Nick Staines. Five of those achieved a double clear but all six combinations earned themselves a place in the final.
Mark Thompson from Findern, Derbyshire went one better than in the previous class with Ryan Page’s Silvarno, a 9 year-old British bred gelding whom Mark has ridden since 2015. They produced an effortless double clear in 39.05 seconds, 0.68 of a second faster than second placed Lucy Bullas and Egaro who crossed the finish line in 39.73 seconds. Mark also took third place on Michelle Yates’ Larino Z.
