Day One: Showjumping gets underway at HOYS 2015

Wednesday 07 October 2015

Irish star Trevor Breen reserved the best until last on day one at Horse of the Year Show in Birmingham as he claimed a thrilling win in the prestigious Addington Manor Talent Seekers competition.

The class, which incorporates the 7 Year Old  Championship, went to the wire and was ultimately decided by just 13 hundredths of a second.

It also maintained Breen's remarkable record in the class, given that he also won it in 2011 with Oldtown KC, and last year on Classic.

Nottinghamshire's Louise Saywell looked to have secured the prize on Dassler with a clear jump-off round in 32.57 seconds, but last-to-go Breen had other ideas.

"I am over the moon," Breen said. "Serpico jumped fantastic for me, and I am thrilled.

"It is fantastic to have a class like this one where young horses can be in this kind of environment."

West Country rider Anna Edwards, meanwhile, produced a stylish performance to win the Connolly's RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Championship.

A high-class producer of young horses, Edwards delivered the goods on the seven-year-old black mare Darling as she claimed a comprehensive triumph.

"I have been coming here for a lot of years, and to finally win was a special moment," Edwards said.

"Every rider wants to get that moment in the limelight here, and I am thrilled. She is a really tiny horse, but she has a massive heart and we make a really good partnership."

Southend schoolgirl Hallie Lunn, meanwhile, went top of the class on day one at HOYS.

The 14-year-old - whose pony Little Boy De Carman is two years older than her - won the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship during a busy opening day's action at the Genting Arena.

Stafford's Katie Shaw also stayed cool under intense pressure to win the British Showjumping Silver League Championship.  Last to go in the jump-off, the combination flew around a testing 1.20-metre course in 29.91 seconds, leaving closest rival Gillian Anderson, riding Congeniality B, almost four seconds behind, while Paul Bevan and Deangelo II finished third.

Reading rider Elizabeth Mantel delivered a sparkling performance on 11-year-old mare Caoimhes Delight to land the British Showjumping Bronze League Championship.

Featuring the most prestigious National Showing and Showjumping Championships, International Showjumping classes, Virbac 3D Worming Mounted Games and Osborne Refrigerators Double Harness Scurry Racing, HOYS 2015 is packed with excitement. The popular and exciting Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch Activity Ride will headline the displays and Team GB Vaulters will impress the audience with their awe-inspiring acrobatic routine.  Friday October 9th is the day of choice for dressage fans, with the Stephen Clarke Dressage Masterclass and the Mount St John Dressage Future Elite Championship both timetabled. The 2015 Show will come to spectacular close during the Sunday Evening Gala Performance, which will include entertainment from Britain’s Got Talent sensations The HoneyBuns. Tickets for Horse of the Year Show 2015 are now on sale. For show information, including the timetable, and to book, visit www.hoys.co.uk or call 0844 581 8282.
