Charles Stanley British Masters International - Day Three

Sunday 03 July 2016

Spectators and VIPs were treated to top-class showjumping in the sun as the British weather relented on the final day of the Charles Stanley British Masters International.

British-based Irishman Richard Howley landed the top-billed Charles Stanley British Masters Grand Prix in an exciting, thrill-packed jump-off on Chinook III.

“He’s a very versatile horse,” said Richard, who recently headed Bramham’s grand prix and finished equal second on four faults in the Hickstead Derby last week on the Wellington x Tygo nine-year-old.

The fifty-one competitors were skilfully reduced to 12 for the jump-off over course-designer Mark McGowan’s 13-fence track with subtle distance questions, wide oxers and tall verticals, and faults were evenly spread.

Annabel Shields set a quick, seemingly unbeatable target with a strong gallop to the last on the Mr Blue 13-year-old Wet Wet Wet, but Richard maxed on his penultimate draw to wipe 0.46 of a second from the time.

“He’s careful, as brave as a lion with oceans of scope, I let him travel and took three strides out to the last,” said Richard, who will now give the former eventer a mini-break.  “He’ll chill in the field for a week before we go to Great Yorkshire and the Cock o’ the North.”

Scotland’s Mark Turnbull eased the Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve nine-year-old Cartouch III into third.

Matthew Sampson claimed his second class of the week on Diana Bartolini’s Papillon Rouge 13-year-old Perfect Rouge, heading the concluding 1.40m Speed Competition by a commanding 3.91 seconds.

“This was the class we aimed for, winning yesterday was a bonus. He’s scopey and the course suited him with quick turn-backs, the more you dare, the better he is,” said Matthew.

Steven Franks brought the Diamant De Semilly 12-year-old Abdul Aziz into second with Paul Barker and the 11-year-old gelding Sandors Legacy third.

Paul was another scoring a double, heading his second class on Spring Equestrian Federation’s Happy Boy. The Kannan nine-year-old, winner of day one’s 1.40m, topped the small grand prix by 1.27 seconds.

“He was spooky on day one but is always better once he’s jumped round, and he’s better when you press him [to go quicker] he doesn’t have time to spook then,” said Paul.
France’sJulien Feuillerac took second on Ipswich Van De Wolfsakker with Jamie Wingrove on Zilfa Heleen third.

Stacey Willsone headed the Amateur 1.20m Masters with 0.42 of a second to spare on Newton Nickel, a Wolfgang x Indoctro 12-year-old bought off breeder Steve Davenport two years ago.

“It’s my first show with him for 18 months, my boyfriend Dan has been riding him and I’ve only just managed to pinch him back,” said Stacey.

Nina Emery and the 10-year-old mare Galaxy III took second ahead of third-placed Paul Bevan on the Vittorio x Voltaire nine-year-old gelding Coco Vittorio.

Winner on the first day, Martha Newall doubled up in the Amateur 1.10m Masters with Ashton Landorina, a Landor S 11-year-old mare bred in Scotland by Mark Turnbull and his family.
Riding, let alone winning, was a feat in itself. Martha had fallen off Landorina at Cheshire Show 10 days ago and snapped a ligament in her ankle, and was riding strapped up.

Elizabeth Christopher took second on the 10-year-old April IV and third was awarded to day two’s winner, Angel Tough on Callumbus.
