Annabel Shields stormed to victory to take the opening day’s feature 1.45m class on Karl Fuller and Robert Shields’ Mr Blue 13-year-old Wet Wet Wet.

The on-form pair, winners of the Balmoral Grand Prix and fourth in Mullingar’s Grand Prix, were 0.56 of a second quicker than their nearest rivals, Ireland’s Anthony Condon on the Oklund 10-year-old Balzac. Mark Edwards eased his home-bred 10-year-old gelding Tinkers Tale into third in the 23-strong jump-off, yielded from 55 starters.

Paul Barker secured the top spot in the 1.40m on Springs Equestrian Federation’s Kannan nine-year-old Happy Boy, taking the 48-starter class by 1.06 seconds. Nigel Coupe eased the 12-year-old gelding Jubilee III into second. Ireland took the next two places, Dermott Lennon in third on Fleur IV with David Simpson in fourth on Keoki, who qualified for the prestigious Horse of the Year Show Foxhunter final just 10 days earlier at Keysoe.

Jamie Wingrove claimed the opening 1.30m in fine style with the Nobility x No Limit 12-year-old Zilfa Heleen, winning by 1.30 seconds. Only 0.54 of a second separated the next five, with Lance Whitehouse taking second on the Cartano nine-year-old gelding Cartino III and Mark Edwards slotting the British-bred, Unbelievable Darco sired Unbelievable Eddie into third.

Ian Wynne and Don Douglas won the 1.20m amateur from Morgan Carpenter on Merllyns Mirage in second and Sally Swiers with Millfield Longsocks third.
