Cassalljack tops the Bolesworth Elite Foal Auction 2020

Last night saw an exciting evening unfold at Bolesworth, as our much-anticipated Elite Foal Auction was presented to an eager global audience.

Taking bids both live in the room at the Al Shira’aa Bolesworth Young Horse Championships and online, they were delighted to receive a significant proportion of bids globally, from as far afield as Australia and the United States, enjoying an average hammer price of £16,643.

The two top lots of the night, Casalljack and Conthargo, were both from the stable of Di Lampard, with their breeding credentials speaking for themselves. Lot Number 13 (lucky for some!), is by Casall Ask, the exceptional ride of Rolf-Goran Bengtsson, he boasts numerous wins at Grand Prix and Championship level and Global Champions Tour victories. He is a highly sought after sire, with over 50 licensed sons to date, and numerous progeny competing at 1.60m level.

Dam, Ruby VIII, is a super athletic performer, already clocking wins at Grand Prix level herself.  Ruby’s dam “Equity” (Indira) was campaigned successfully by Di herself, scoring numerous wins up to 1.55m level at CSI 5* level. Boasting a world-class pedigree with black-type dam line to match, it is no wonder that online bidding gained pace while the introductory video still was playing, leading to the hammer eventually going down to a bidder in the room at £33,000.

Conthargo was not far behind, achieving a final price of £30,000. Also out of Di’s Grand Prix mare, Ruby VIII, this March-born colt is another striking prospect. Sired by Conthargos, the stallion that is the talk of Europe, his son represents everything that he stands for in scope, quality and athleticism.

In a first for our Elite Auctions, two Embryos were also auctioned as the evening drew to a close. Lot Number 19, (Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Wild Rose), due in 2021, was sold for £14,000, in a closely fought battle between a pair of live and online bidders.

The global interest and prices achieved in the Bolesworth Elite Auctions are a testament to the continual quality of foals selected for our Elite Auctions, with a focus on exceptionally successful performance bloodlines, and a strong ‘Black Type’ dam line. We very much look forward to following their progress in the years to come.

Said Nina Barbour, “We were delighted with last night’s result, and it is hugely encouraging to see the strength and breadth of British breeding which continues to improve year on year. Although operating strictly under the Covid-19 guidelines, it was fantastic to be able to present the foals live at the event, and we wish all buyers the very best of luck with their future stars!

Bolesworth will continue to champion Sport Horse Breeding in the UK working with British breeders and vendors to select and prepare horses for future sales.

Our ethos of only selecting youngstock with World Class “black type” dams (either elite performers in their own right to 1.45m level and above or with close relations that have performed to a similar or higher elite level) in the pedigree as well as incorporating the highest performing sires will cement Bolesworth’s position on the world stage for performance horse auctions.”
