At the fifth leg of in the International Stairway Series 2022, it was Angela Thompson, from Chipping Campden in Gloucester, who took first place on her own 13 year-old bay mare Victoria VII, at the Devon County Show.
Matthew Hoskins course proved to be a challenge in the first round with only two of the 13 starters jumping clear within the time allowed. Angela Thompson and Victoria VII went head-to-head in the jump off with the winner of the previous round in the International Stairway Series, Mennell Watson and Whisper In The Wind. Both combinations went clear in the jump off, but it was Angela Thompson who managed to navigate her ride over the finish line in the faster time, finishing in 62.34 seconds, just 0.26 seconds quicker than second place to clinch the win. Mennell Watson and Euro Sport Horses’ Whisper In The Wind finished second, crossing the finish line in a time of 62.60. Phillip Miller took third place with Breandon Stud‘s Don Royale, having picked up 3 time faults in the first round.
The International Stairway takes place across a number of county shows where winning combinations accrue League Points that count towards the Final which takes place at the British Showjumping National Championships in August at Stoneleigh Park. The series culminates with a high-profile championship where three Horse of the Year Show International Wild Cards are allocated as well as it being where the sports National Champion is crowned.
