Katie Benbow went all out for the win in a hotly contended Equiyd 1.10m National Amateur Championship with Latico at the Equiyd National Amateur and Veterans Championships at the popular Aintree Equestrian Centre.
Eleven of the 38 entries made their way into the jump-off with Katie using her midway draw on Latico to win with 1.11 seconds to spare over early leader Catherine Vale aboard Quiz IV.
“I didn’t watch the first few go but I’d seen the 1.05m jump-off [over the same track] and as she has such a big stride for a small horse, I knew I could take out a stride on the distance between the first two fences. I also got tight back to an oxer, tighter than I’d planned but I saw a stride and went for it,” said Katie. “She’s been amazing all week, she’s sassy but loves a jump-off – the more I let her off and do her thing, the more she loves it.”
Katie bought this Flinstone De Ness x Concorde eight-year-old from breeder Liane Smith.
“She [Latico] had bred a foal as a three/four-year-old and I bought her as a wild, untouched rising five-year-old – she hadn’t even had a rug on. Sometimes she can still be a little be quirky, such as the loud music at Aintree made her spin round before we went in the ring, but in the stable she’s the kindest, sweetest horse with a heart of gold who loves all the attention,” added Katie, who won the 2024 British Novice Final and finished sixth in the 2025 HOYS Bronze League Final with the fastest time but four faults on this mare.
