Blue Chip Winter Showjumping Championships 2016

The atmosphere was electric…..if Jay Halim could beat Robert Smith and win the Blue Chip Grand Prix, he would also take the Andrews Bowen £1,000 bonus, no pressure then!  To rousing cheers, he did it! Taking daring risks with Helen Rees’ feisty Bart VI and a gallop to the last, Jay wiped two seconds from the time.  The £1,000 bonus, offered to the Blue Chip Pro Challenge riders who place in the top three if they then go on to win the Blue Chip Grand Prix, has never been won before in its eight year history.

“This is amazing, I came here to win, but to actually do it – I’m overwhelmed,” said Jay, who had worried Bart VI would be too hot in the twelve-strong jump-off after taking second the night before.

“He usually has a day off in between, but he did go out in the field for chill time this morning.”

It was a fitting finale to the Gala night on the 25th anniversary year of these championships.

“This is my local show and I wondered if the horses would look at all the decorations and say, ‘Dad, this is different!’ but there’s not much that fazes Bart,” said Jay.  “And I’m getting back into it; I’m a bit ring-rusty after three months off getting things straight after moving.”

Robert Smith jumped into second place with Cimano E with Phillip Miller in third on Brendon Stud’s Unbelievable Lady.

Second in last year’s B and C by the narrowest of margins, Mark Edwards went one better in the Blue Chip Pro challenge with Unbelievable Eddie in a strong jump-off of twenty seven.

“He wants to win as much as I do, he has so much heart,” said Mark, who was pleased for owner Samantha Thomas.

“She had a bad fall off a youngster six weeks ago and is still hobbling, this will cheer her up.”

Julian Mincher made a triumphant return, winning the Blue Chip Dynamic B and C for the second year running.  In 2015 Julian won with Dolanda, this year it was the turn of Samantha Middleton’s Eindhoven GH to be the victor.

“I know I can cruise and easily take out a stride,” said Julian, on the valiant seven-year-old, “And he knows when it’s important and rises to the occasion.”

Emma-Jo Slater rewarded owner Kim Barzilay with the championship win she coveted, the Blue Chip Karma Performance title, riding Kim’s home-bred Kimba Flamenco.  This big 17hh gelding is by Je T’Aime Flamenco and out of the Heartbreaker mare Uttah Van Het Indihof . A great win for Emma-Jo.

“He’s very easy and thinks about everything, he wants to do it better all the time,” said Emma-Jo.

In a hot, hard-fought jump-off, Adrian Whiteway emerged victorious in the Halsall Electrical 1.25m Championship. Riding Cojack, a nine-year-old owned jointly with Heather Larson.

“He’s so quick and jumping in Spain last November and moving him up to 1.40m has been the making of him,” said Adrian.

Claudia Rees seized the Blue Chip Joint RLF Power Championship with her own Renkum Knopfler, a nine-year-old bought unbroken six years ago.

“He’s sweet and easy, he did very little while I was at University studying politics and might not go to a show for six weeks,” said Claudia, “Now I have more time and in the last six months he’s been very consistent.”

In a boost for British breeding, another from Renkum Stud offspring topped the Joshua Jones UK discovery championship.  Bethanie Knight on Kerry Grimster’s Renkum Ruby Rouge proved just 0.03 sec faster than Emma-Jo Slater’s Cosmic Mojo.

“I’ve just returned from the sunshine tour, it was amazing,” said Bethanie, who found that Ruby, a Renkum Valentino six-year-old, gained invaluable experience.

Adam Taylor maxed on his final draw to take the HorseQuest UK Novice Championship on Paulette Cooper’s Irish-bred eight year-old, Cedarmount Socks.

“He loves the job and is as careful as a cat,” said Retford-based Adam.

Milli Cornock powered Bommel into victory in the Ariat Star Championship, a Concorde 10 year-old bought three years ago from Rowland Fernyhough, for whom she works as a part-time groom.

“Rowland’s great and lets me jump at shows when I’m working,” said Milli, who initially loaned Bommel – “I had to buy him when he came up for sale, I couldn’t lose him.”

Hannah Vincent lifted the Haygain Hay Steamers Diamond Final with her ‘horse of a lifetime’ Jabberwocky.

“He’s amazing, I’ve hardly competed the last two years as I was setting up my own business running a riding school, but he’s come back as good as ever,” said Hannah.

Ponies

Georgie Burchmore-Eames landed her second championship victory in five days on the consistent Ron Burgundy.  They were crowned British Showjumping 148cm special titleholders at Pony of the Year Show, and continued by taking the Blue Chip Pro Sparkle JC/JA Championship here.

“He’s laidback and he conserves his energy between rounds and goes to sleep, but he wakes up in a jump-off and loves winning,” said Georgie, who has HOYS Foxhunter and Pony Showjumper of the year ambitions.

Jack Smith galloped his way into the HorseQuest UK Coral Championship winner’s spot on the eager Monkey Munchkin.

“He can gallop and jump and the faster he goes, the more careful he becomes,” said Jack, 15, who has ridden this appealing pony for the last two years.  “He does cross-country and pony club too, and after this he’s having a nice holiday.”

Jessica Howard has hit a winning streak.  She gained the Pony of the Year Show Novice title with Claire Darwin’s Rocky Robin, and just days later, scored an amazing double here.

They headed the Animo Novice title by an incredible five sec then claimed the Animo Discovery Championship.

“We have so much trust in each other, I knew I could pull off the tight turns and he has a great length of stride,” said Jessica, 14, who has ridden the Irish-bred nine-year-old since July.

Kent-based Archie Ray, on his first visit it the Blue Chip championships, and gained the HorseQuest UK Pony Sapphire Championship on Tower Hamlets.

“He’s the easiest pony at home but we’ve had to work on our flatwork,” said Archie, 14, who has advice from James Howard and John Addington with the pony bought six months ago.
