Forty combinations came forward to battle it out in the fourth qualifier for the SEIB Winter Novice Championship 2015 and the class took place on Saturday 10th January at The College Equestrian Centre, Keysoe in Bedfordshire.
With just two qualifying places available for the Championship, which will be held at the Longines Royal International Horse Show during 28th July – 2nd August 2015, each competitor came forward with the aim of delivering a double clear as they knew that would put them in with a chance of securing a sought-after qualification spot.
Seventeen of the starters produced foot perfect first rounds to progress through to the jump off. The jump off track proved to be testing with just three double clears being produced and this in turn meant that the allocation of the qualification places came down to the times produced.
The fastest double clear of the class was delivered by 36 year-old Emma-Jo Slater from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Emma-Jo partnered Kimba Flamenco, a 6 year-old chestnut gelding owned by Kim Barzilay. Drawn tenth to go in the jump off, the combination had seen just one other combination go double clear and Emma-Jo knew that an accurate and fast clear would put them in contention. The combination duly proceeded to do this, putting down a double clear in just 37.00 seconds, which was to prove good enough for victory.
Sam Ward, aged 23, from Ipswich, Suffolk took second place on Didante, a 7 year-old grey mare owned by Leanne Cox. Sam and Didante followed Emma-Jo and Kimba Flamenco in the jump off and they delivered a solid round to finish less than a second behind the winners. Their double clear was achieved in 37.92 seconds.
