Thanks to funding received by Sport England, British Showjumping is pleased to announce the first cohort of riders selected on to the ‘Step Up to Gold’ training programme.
A total of eight riders are being taken forward on to the programme following on from the four training and selection days held back in October. The eight riders have been split across the country with two riders from the North, South, East and West.
The training programme will focus on the transition of riders into the Gold League. The group selected are all looking to progress in order to be competing and establishing themselves at 1.40m competitions by the end of the programme.
Matt Lanni is the Lead Coach and has given his insight into the programme "Justine Naylor, British Showjumping National Director of Sport, has obtained funding from Sport England to develop our talented riders and horses through this ‘Step up to Gold’ training programme.
“Aimed at those wanting to make the transition to become competitive in 1.40m classes, we have selected eight riders from across the country who we feel have the ability and commitment to make this step.
“Additionally, we are also using this opportunity to develop four regional coaches by working with them at the first National training day before then assigning each of their riders to them.
“There will be two further National training days where we can monitor and expand the training right through to the completion of the programme where riders will have competed at a 1.40m competition of a high standard.
“The eight riders will also have the opportunity to attend numerous sports science workshops and broaden their knowledge to help with this transition. The end result will give the riders knowledge and understanding of what it takes to be competitive at this level. Each year for the following three years we will re-select new riders and coaches in order to give as many people as possible this opportunity."
The riders selected are as follows:
North
Carla Bolam (County Durham)
Laura Whitfield (Northumberland)
South
Jasmine Punter (Wiltshire)
