Richard Howley lands the win in the British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifier at Bramham Horse Trials

Richard Howley seized victory in the British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Grade C Qualifier at Bramham Horse Trials with Kowla.

“He’s very competitive and won two 1.45m classes out in Spain in the winter.  He hasn’t done many shows in between but he’s advanced for his age,” said Richard.

Sixty-one entries promised a hard-fought class and 16 competitors posted first round clears over the course that started at 1.35m.  Richard had the win sewn up on the Dutch-bred Kolwa with 1.40 seconds to spare.

“I kept it tight and smooth but a lot of horses rolled back to fence three, got deep and hit the back bar, it was quite a meaty oxer so I went a little bit wider there but took one less stride to the double as he’s careful and easily adjustable.  It was a competitive class and he won it well,” said Richard, who co-owns the Connect x Lord Z 8-year-old with National Hunt jockey Aidan Coleman.

“At HOYS last year, Aidan was saying how he’d like to own a horse with us, so he invested in Kolwa in October – now he has a HOYS finalist,” said Richard, who finds Kolwa is a “bit of a character.  He likes to go his own way, he’s got an old head on young shoulders and he likes to go forward so I let him travel and jump.  He’s scopey and careful and has the makings of a good grand prix horse.”

Rebecca Marsh gained a second HOYS ticket with second place on her 11-year-old Foxhunter finalist Stevie G and James Whitaker secured the third and final qualifying place on the Argento 8-year-old Just Call Me Henry.
