Newmarket’s Tabby Morgan-Evans races to victory at Hickstead

Newmarket’s Tabby Morgan-Evans secured the win in the Coldstream Equestrian British Showjumping Winter 138cms Championships today at the Agria Royal International Horse Show.

At just 12 years old, Tabby is one of Britain’s brightest young stars of showjumping, and last year she became the country’s youngest-ever equestrian to win a team gold medal at the European Championships.

Her win today came on the Connemara, Churchfield Tulla Bluebell, one of four ponies that she had qualified for today’s final. “The others were sold, but I’d picked ‘Silver’ to keep because I knew she’d be the best one,” said Tabby. “She’s very, very special and so quick against the clock, so I knew that I just had to keep cantering and she’d help me out. I can’t believe it – that was incredible,” said Tabby, who is based at her parents’ stables in Newmarket, where the family business focuses on the backing and pre-training of racehorses.

The pair were one of six to make it into the jump-off – and in this pivotal second round, they were the only partnership to leave all the fences up, crossing the finish line in a time of 43.54sec. Runners-up Alex Leggott and Blossom’s Letterkeen Bettyn were the only combination to be faster than Tabby and her pony, but they tipped a rail to relegate them to second place.

Though Tabby has ridden in some of the sport’s biggest and buzziest arenas, winning at Hickstead is particularly special. “It’s so brilliant to ride in the grass ring with all the atmosphere all around. It’s an amazing feeling.”

The Agria Royal International Horse Show takes place at Hickstead in West Sussex from 23-27 July. Tickets are available at the gate or from www.hickstead.co.uk. The action will also be shown live on ClipMyHorse.TV.
