Day 4 at HOYS - Walton Sets A Tough Target at HOYS

Drew Walton set a pace no-one could match as she landed the 138cm Championship at Horse of the Year Show with My Bugsy Malone.

Preston rider Drew, 13, was first to go of eight combinations in the jump-off at Birmingham's LG Arena, and a time of 34.71 seconds proved enough for the title as she improved on her third-place finish in the same class last year. It was her fifth HOYS appearance.

Drew's fellow Lancastrian Robert Murphy went closest to catching her, but a final fence knockdown ended his chances, although he had recovered brilliantly after falling from his first pony in the class Thyme Flies.

Two Scottish challengers, meanwhile, were second and third - Emma Crawford, riding Mitcheltroy Welsh Express, and Fraser Reed on Mr J K.

"I went into the jump-off and was first to go, so I had no-one to watch first, and I just went for it. It paid off," Drew said.

"I am just so happy to win it. He is just an amazing pony.

"He has the power, is quick naturally and turns very well. He is also very careful, and he always seems to know where he is going."
