Celebrating Showjumping Apprenticeships during National Apprenticeship Week 2015

Haddon Training is a work-based training provider, delivering apprenticeships throughout the equine industry. To support National Apprenticeship Week 2015, Haddon Training caught up with some of our showjumping employers to see why apprentices are good for their businesses.

Nicola Sheard at Cricket Hill Equestrian believes putting her Yard Supervisor, Hayley Atkin, through a Business Apprenticeship will benefit her competition yard and the way it is run. Cricket Hill Equestrian has been operating as a competition and training yard for 8 years with three members of staff. The Yard Supervisor is currently undertaking a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Team Leading with Haddon Training.

“We were looking to develop our Yard Supervisor’s skills and training to enhance the structure of our yard,” says Nicola. “We have always heard good reviews about Haddon Training and felt they offered us the training and support we were looking for.”

Having worked with Haddon Training for Hayley’s business apprenticeship, Nicola is now looking to employ another apprentice for a Horse Care qualification; “[Haddon Training staff are] knowledgeable, professional and offer great support to us as employers and also to our apprentice.”

Matthew Lanni owns Halefield Stud in Cambridgeshire a competition yard with three full-time staff of which one is a Level 2 Horse Care apprentice. This is the second apprentice at Halefield Stud. Matt’s positive experience encouraged him to employ another apprentice.

For Matt, the benefit of having an apprentice trained on site allows him to ensure they gain the right knowledge and enables it to be reinforced on a daily basis. On an intensive competition yard, having staff trained with the correct methods ensures its smooth running and allows the employer to be confident in their employees work. Matt has found working with Haddon Training to be a successful partnership, “[you can] always be assured of quality assessments and the control of standards with Haddon Training.”

Peter and Paula Allen have had a competition yard for eight years at Stainsby Grange Equestrian Centre. There is five full time staff including two apprentices, one of which is working towards their Level 3 Horse Care Apprenticeship. Peter spoke to us about their previous experiences with other training organisations and why they now prefer to use Haddon Training; “we find Haddon Training’s knowledge of equestrianism beneficial to both ourselves and the apprentices.”

For Peter, the flexibility and industry knowledge of Haddon Training staff has made their experience of employing apprentices positive: “I have found Haddon Training to be very understanding of the unique environment that equestrianism poses and they are willing to tailor the apprenticeship programme and assessments to fit with our business and the competition schedules.”
