All three Brits through to the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Final on Sunday
Friday 08 April 2022

From the starting list of thirty-three riders only eight combinations managed to achieve a first round clear across the Frank Rothenberger designed course. With none of the leading four from yesterday’s first leg of the competition, which takes in three days of jumping, this saw quite a shake up across the overall standings heading into Sunday’s third and final competition.
It was McLain Ward (USA) that took victory today with Contagious after a thrilling jump off saw him last to come forward. It was our young talent in the form of Harry Charles and Jack Whitaker that really gave him a run for his money. Harry, riding Romeo a 13 year-old bay gelding owned by himself and Ann Thompson along with Jack Whitaker with Equine America Valmy de la Lande, a 13 year-old grey stallion owned by Jack’s father Michael, finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. It was Harrie Smolders (NED) with Monaco that took 4th and Gregory Cottard (FRA) 5th with legendary British rider John Whitaker slotting into 6th place with Equine America Unick du Francport, whom he owns with wife Clare.
With only three double clears achieved in the competition it was an incredible performance by Harry and Jack to achieve their penalty free rounds. Harry, with his time of 47.14 seconds had certainly put in a fast performance before McLain managed to relegate him by maximizing the opportunity given to him as the last rider to enter the arena. Knowing what he had to beat he managed to shave some time off to stop the clock in 44.03 seconds. Jack also put in a tremendous round to finish in 48.66 seconds having focused on posting a clear which duly paid off. For John it was an unfortunate 4 penalties picked up when a touch of a pole saw it lowered in what was a fast time of 45.02 seconds.
Di Lampard, World Class Performance Manager for Showjumping said “I couldn’t be more proud of the riders representing us in Leipzig. They are a fantastic trio with John and our two younger talents Harry and Jack who have ridden with maturity far beyond their years. It’s superb to have three British riders through to the Final which is something that at this moment in time I can’t recall happening previously. I’m wishing all three the very best of luck on Sunday and I’m really looking forward to watching it all play out and cheering them on.”
With results of the first two competitions calculated it is now today’s winner McLain who heads the league going into Sunday’s third and deciding competition. Harry sits in 3rd place, Jack 9th and John 11th which means all three Brits are now secure of their place in the Final which takes place on Sunday afternoon and can be watched on FEIT TV via www.clipmyhorse.tv
