100 Days to Go until Rio 2016

The British Olympic Association rallies the nation to show its support for Team GB as we hit 100 days to go until Rio 2016

London, UK April 27th: With 100 days to go until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Team GB is encouraging the United Kingdom get behind its athletes as they prepare to reach their goals and make the nation proud once again.

Following the extraordinary feats displayed by our athletes at London 2012, where the power of home support saw Team GB tally an incredible 65 medals, the overwhelming backing of a nation has never been more important as our athletes prepare for an Olympic Games thousands of miles away.

The blood, sweat and tears experienced by athletes in the years leading up to Rio 2016 is no secret. The rigorous training routines, the highs, the lows and the sacrifices all contribute to success at an Olympic Games. In London 2012 Team GB felt the incredible home support cheering them on, encouraging them to reach new heights and, in turn, inspired a nation with outstanding performances.

Narrowing the 6,000 miles between the UK and Brazil, Team GB is encouraging the nation to unite through its official Fan Club; a digital base that connects the fan with the athlete through inspiring words of support. Adding the personal touch, members will also be able to show dedication to the team by leaving messages of support, which will feature on customised Union Flags out with the team in Rio.

Through the Club, fans will discover the latest athlete news and stories; whether in established sports that have created awe-inspiring moments in previous Olympic Games, or in the newest additions for Rio 2016 including golf and rugby 7s. Fans will also get access to exclusive benefits such as special offers, discounts and competitions via Team GB official partners, as well as behind the scenes content from the Games themselves.

“This is another huge year for Team GB and the athletes taking part have committed so much to get to Brazil. The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be extremely special and we want the nation to feel the same excitement and pride that was so powerful during London 2012,” said Bill Sweeney, BOA Chief Executive.

“We know that Team GB will give everything for an incredible performance, we just need to ensure they can hear the roar of the nation behind them.”

The success of previous Games, including London 2012, helped raise the profile of some of Team GB’s biggest names. Olympians such as Anthony Joshua, Sir Chris Hoy and Nicola Adams all harnessed the nation’s support to win a gold medal and now it’s time to offer the same support to our next wave of medal hopefuls.

“As someone who’s competed in five Olympic Games I can tell you first hand just how important it is to feel the support of the whole nation,” said Sir Steve Redgrave.

“A nation’s support can inspire, galvanise and push you through the hardest of boundaries, it can get you over the line and be the difference between winning gold or silver.”

The nation can also show its support by wearing the Team GB Bahia Band, the official supporter item made in, and inspired by, our hosts Brazil. The Bahia Band will be available from the Team GB online shop from April 27 priced at £3 for two differently coloured bands.
