Yesterday saw one of the largest prize money Grand Prix’s in the world take place at the prestigious Spruce Meadows CSIO5* in the grounds of Calgary in Canada.
With top riders from across the world all competing for their share of the $1,000,000 prize fund, it was definitely a class not to be missed. Course Designer Leopoldo Palacios built a challenging course which tested every single combination.
It was Warwickshire based Robert Smith riding 10 year old bay stallion Talan (owned by himself, Diana and Penny Cornish) that came out on top for Great Britain. The pair had an unlucky pole and 1 time fault to leave them on a total score of 5 faults putting them in 5th position overall securing themselves $50,000.
Suffolk based Philip Spivey was not far behind Robert finishing in overall 6th place. Philip rode Tracey Forrest’s 12 year old chestnut stallion Romanov II who although was only one of the four clear in the first round had an unfortunate 9 faults in the second round winning a total prize fund of $37,000.
Both Guy Williams and Geoff Billington also finished within the prize money winning $7,000 between them.
