Ronnie Jones dominates the British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Horse of the Year Show Grade C Championship Qualifier at Royal Norfolk Show

Ronnie Jones outpaced all his rivals to take the top two places in the British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Horse of the Year Show Grade C Championship Qualifier at Royal Norfolk.

Thirty-five competitors came forward to face course-designer Michael Bainbridge’s 13-fence 1.35m track with 10 finding all the right answers to gain access to the jump-off.

“The course was good, not a killer in the first round but a good enough height so it wasn’t a rat-race in the jump-off; it was one of the best HOYS Grade C classes I’ve jumped,” said Ronnie.

Ronnie had it all sewn up with Ruth Dowie’s two talented 8-year-olds, flying into the top spot from the front aboard the Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve x Phin Phin stallion Key West III by 3.71 seconds.

Ronnie brought Kaleche (F One USA x Nassau) into second to give this mare a second HOYS final; the pair are already qualified for the Foxhunter championship.

“I had expected it to be a fast jump-off but fence four caught out a lot and as I was last to go on Kaleche and John Crippen had done a steady clear, I knew I needed to be a little faster to be first and second,” said Ronnie.  “I did just one turn and she’s an old pro at a jump-off now and we got it.”

It isn’t the first time these two horses have taken the top two in a prestigious class – two years ago, the result was reversed in the Big Star 6-year-old with Kaleche in the top spot and Key West second.

“He [Key West] has grown up in Kaleche’s shadow but he had good results on the Spanish Sunshine Tour early in the year, and it all clicked when jumping a few medium tour world ranking classes.  He’s careful and has taken time but I think he’ll have a great future – it’s so nice to be able to produce them as youngsters,” said Ronnie, who had a foal by Key West born last week.

“She’s a lovely filly and we have another due in August.”

John Crippen claimed the third and final qualifying spot on the 7-year-old Bennys Kelly (Tullibards Bennys Legacy x Harlequin Du Carel).
