Lisa Jones strides out to win the Equissage Pulse Senior British Novice Championship at the British Showjumping National Championships

“She has a massive stride, a 15.2hh who thinks she’s 17.2hh and that’s where we won it, I took out strides down every distance,” said Lisa Jones, after winning a strong, competitive jump-off to take the Equissage Pulse British Novice title on Chloe Abrahams’ Zevusina BZ.

A total of 57 competitors came forward to face course-designer Ben Townley’s 12-fence 1.05m track and 24 hopefuls posted initial clears to tackle the jump-off and bid for glory, including former winners.

Lisa took advantage of the Zurich x Tampa 12-year-old Zevusina’s huge, scopey stride to forge ahead and claim victory by 1.14 seconds on the championship that has been a big aim this year.

“She’s quick and careful and I dared her,” said Lisa, who acquired the ride five months earlier.  “She’s level-headed now but was quite hot at first.  However, I get on well with sharp horses and we manage her; she only gets ridden three times a week, including the day before a show, she keeps herself fit and loves her job.”

Newcomers double clears for next year are already in the bag with Foxhunter double clears the next target as second rounds to qualify for HOYS are the 2024 focus.

“She has quite a big brain and is a forward thinker so she anticipates, we’ve concentrated on her flatwork to train her not to get so excited – she wants to take the pilot around the course,” added Lisa.

Stephanie Gunn steered Leilaroos into second place with Robert Skyrme filling third spot aboard Zambina Rambo.
