Friday at the Dodson & Horrell Bolesworth International Horse Show

Sporting success continues to build on day 3 of the Dodson & Horrell Bolesworth International Horse Show. With a strong contingent of world class riders including Olympic contenders Holly Smith (GBR), Ben Maher (GBR) and Michael Duffy (IRL) the impressive start lists from CSI-Amateurs, Al Shira’aa Young Horse classes through to the 3* 1.50m Grand Prix qualifier made for a highly competitive day.
Faye Adams and Demograaf remained on winning form in the Castle Arena securing a second win of the week in the Horseware Ireland CSI3* 1.40m. Putting an extra stride in before fence two to ensure it stayed up, Faye then pushed the 13-year-old gelding on, knowing she need to shave some time in order to be competitive and replicate her win from the day before. Her efforts paid off as she came home victorious two seconds clear of the field.
Speaking about the round Faye recalled, “It was a fast round, but he was handling it and being very careful. I knew if I could keep him on his hocks and let him travel, he’d do the rest.” True to form the Quasimodo Z gelding rose to the occasion.
The first of the Al Shira’aa Young Horse classes, the CSIYH1* 5 YO went to 19-year-old Nicole Lockhead Anderson and her new ride Lorenzo. Stable jockey to Holly Smith, Nicole expertly piloted the young horse around the course staying slightly on the inside from the vertical at number 8 into the double to gain the advantage on the clock. Consistently clear all week, the flowing 5 YO course designed by Louis Konickx suited the scopey El Salvador gelding with a ground covering stride.
A well-executed plan secured the win for Adam Botham (GBR)and stallion Ebanking in the Al Shira’aa CSIYH1* 7 YO class. A big course built on lines that didn’t offer many inside turns, Adam decided from fence one to take out a stride on every related distance. With a naturally flawless technique coupled with great brain, the stallion didn’t disappoint. Feeling positive for the future Adam commented “The minute he walks into an arena he knows his job. He jumps the height of the jump and does what he needs to do. He’s on fantastic form, fresh from a win in the 7 YO at Hickstead, he’s a super easy stallion that’s continuously improving.” The son of Etoulon, who now boasts no fewer than 60 offspring jumping to 1.60, Ebanking currently has foals on the floor and mares covered for next year. The young stallion will now be campaigned for the Foxhunter Final and World Breeding Championships.
A top-class field of 72 contested the final class of the day in the Dodson & Horrell CSI3* 1.50m Grand Prix Qualifier, with 13 leading riders going forward to the jump off in the world ranking class. Setting the pace with the first clear was Millie Allen with the Davenport’s Heartbreaker stallion, Daniel. The round was quickly followed by a masterclass in speed by the formidable Angelie Von Essen and Cochella, the world class combination relied upon by the Swedish Nations Cup team, pushed with an absolute flyer to the last to take the lead in 37.22. Dramatic changes to the leader board thereafter saw Georgia Tame with Z7 Ascot, owned by Team Z 7 and Breen Equestrian, finishing the course less than 0.44 of a second behind Angelie Von Essen, holding 2nd place until Daniel Coyle (IRL) and Legacy started their round. Making light work of the influential roll back turn to the double, Daniel and Legacy finished within a breath of Angelie Von Essen in 37.25 seconds. A world ranking result that left the top three with less than half a second between them and all to play for in Sunday’s thrilling Grand Prix finale.
Ahead of Friday evening’s Science Supplements inaugural A-List auction, the yearling Lots were presented in the International Arena and well received by the receptive crowd. Chosen for their highly sought after, modern bloodlines, natural presence and athletic ability, the yearling Lots impressed with their exceptional attitudes and impressive paces. The prolific and proven sires Christian 25, Casall ASK and Cicero Z are but a few of the world-class stallions featured in the bloodlines of the Lots, out of ‘Black-Type’ damlines, all of whom are closely related to top 1.60m performers or in their own right.
Saturday tickets have now sold out, however general admission tickets are still available for Sunday, and includes the show finale, the Dodson & Horrell CSI3* 1.50m Grand Prix, retailing at £15.00 for adults and £7.50 for children with free parking. Children under three can enter for free and well-behaved dogs are welcome too.
Due to limited numbers, pre-booking is advised, however tickets will be available to purchase on Sunday only and will incur an additional £5 parking fee.
