Elloise Smit takes a home win in the Equissage Pulse British Novice Second Round at The Suffolk Equestrian Centre

Elloise Smit didn’t have to travel far to compete in the Equissage Pulse British Novice Second Round. Proprietor of The Suffolk Equestrian Centre alongside her mother Deborah, she captured the top spot of the exciting jump-off with Navarro VII to claim a finalist place at the British Showjumping National Championships, Stoneleigh.

Forty-one competitors came forward over course-designer Toby Bancroft’s 10-fence 1m course with 22 providing initial clears, round two reducing them to 14 for the third and final round against the clock.

Elloise negotiated the shortened and raised track to claim victory by 2.44 seconds on Navarro, a Heart Touch x Arezzo VDL five-year-old bought two years ago.

“I sold a Connemara and wanted to spend the money on a nice youngster, so I called Jonathan Egmore to see if he had anything suitable. He had – ‘Come and pick him up and try him’ he said.  I viewed a little blood horse, super-careful who tries so hard and is so my ride. Three hours after the Connemara left the yard, I brought ‘Chico’ home,” said Elloise, who considers her buy is well named.

“He’s the naughtiest horse on the yard, really cheeky, but we love him, he has so much character.  He’s very green and has only jumped one round a day before; the third round is the biggest course he’s ever seen but he has such a good brain. “It was the first time he’s received a rosette but he loves showing off and revelled in all the attention – now he’s got the biggest head!”

Amy Smith eased Kontessa Van Den Muggenhoek into second place with Alison Lee and Furst Bellini 66 filling third spot.
