Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds at Wellington Riding Centre

The Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds got underway this weekend with two show centres holding the 85cm, 95cm, 1.05m and 1.10m second round classes. Wellington Riding Centre in Heckfield, Hampshire was one of those show centres and riders from across the South flocked to the showground with the hopes of securing a qualifying ticket to the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool between 9 - 14 November.
Eight of the starting field in the 85cm second round managed to negotiate a first round clear across the course designed by Lisa Kelly, with five going on to bag a double clear.
Aboard Ann Crocker’s The Snipper, 17 year-old Lillymae Coupar from Reading, Berkshire had her foot firmly on the gas with the 20 year-old bay gelding as they raced home clear in 37.02 seconds. Right on their heels was Sophie Nuttall who posted a clear round in 38.85 seconds with Marcia Coombs Fortuna Z.
In the first of the 95cm second rounds, twelve of the initial starting combinations produced a clear round over the ten-fence track with five going on to scoop a double clear. Jessie Hudson from Horsham, West Sussex piloted Rowena Hudson’s Jafatosca HBC, a 7 year-old bay mare whom Jessie has been competing for over a year, to victory with a double clear in a time of 41.44 seconds; 0.86 seconds faster than second placed Hayley-Fiona Simpson with her own Dali IV.
Moving on to the 1.05m track, twelve combinations produced a first round clear, but the placings were still to be decided. West Sussex’s Hannah Tiley came out on top with her own Capistelle JX, a 10 year-old bay mare, crossing the finish line in 41.48 seconds. Hannah also took the runners up sot with her own Amaryllis III.
Twelve of the initial starting field produced a clear in the first round over the 1.10m eleven fence track with six combinations going double clear. Natasha Turner from Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire took the top spot with Jo Turner’s Bonmahon Artist. The 11 year-old bay gelding crossed the line in 37.59 seconds, just behind them was Helen Mcall and Ebony WG on 37.98 seconds
Eight qualifying tickets are given for each of the four classes which are allocated once official grading has been completed. Those qualified for the championships in their specific height category can be found here.
