Competitors gathered at Pencoed College near Bridgend to battle it out for the top spots in the penultimate Dodson & Horrell 1.05m and 1.10m National Amateur Second Rounds of this year.

Qualification for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships, held at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool during the 16th – 20th November, was at the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Dodson & Horrell 1.05m National Amateur Second Round

The technical course took its toll on the starting field, reducing it down to a nail biting three horse jump off. Campbell Thompson from Tarporley, Cheshire gave a thrilling performance on board his own 16 year-old chestnut gelding, Croft Getto Kid to scoop up first place. As the final combination to go, this partnership crossed the finish line in 42.19 seconds.

Amy Thomson from Cardiff, South Glamorgan jumped in to second place on board her own 6 year-old chestnut gelding, Ellies Eclipse. This pair put in a strong performance from first draw to post a double clear in 43.07 seconds.

Third place went to Debbie Clapp who made the trip down from Carmarthen with her own 23 year-old bay gelding, Lord Gilabee. Hot on Amy’s heels this pair produced a double clear in 45.87 seconds.

With only one first round clear having been produced, there was no requirement for a jump off.

Taking the win was 17 year-old Ella Jones from Llantwit Major, South Glamorgan who rode Back in Action, a 10 year-old chestnut gelding owned by Huw Jones to an cracking clear round. Although this partnership were not the fastest round the course, their more haste less speed approach defiantly paid off as they crossed the finish line in 70.17 seconds.
