BRITISH SHOWJUMPING WELSH MASTERS 2013
The Welsh national anthem rang out of the speakers as newly-crowned Welsh Masters champions took joyful laps of honour.

Tim Gredley has just returned from America, where he was competing on the Palm Beach Tour and was in cracking form to claim the Martin Collins Gand Prix on Unex Competition Yard’s 11 year-old bay stallion Unex Omega Star in a strong, 17-horse jump-off.

“I’m still getting to know him but it’s all good so far, I think he’ll become my top horse” said Tim, who bought the stallion by Quick Star from Neil Jones in January.

Nicole Pavitt was in sizzling form to take two championship titles home. Annihilating all opposition, she claimed the ladies title from the front of the 29-horse jump-off riding her mother Sandra’s feisty 13 year-old bay mare Amaryllis Van De Heffink.

“It’s great to have her back” said Nicole, who had lent the mare to Ella Popely for children-on-horses over the past two years.

Embryo transfer plans using Don VHP Z – ridden by her elder sister Louise until the mare was sold to America, are now imminent for Amaryllis Van De Heffink.

Sussex-based Nicole also headed the five-year-old title for Brendon Stud on the bay, Fabrice Van Overis, a stallion by for Pleasure purchased in Belgium three years ago.

“He was brilliant considering we rode him in a hackamore for the first time yesterday” said Nicole, who had changed from his usual rubber snaffle due to a slight cut on his mouth.

Fabrice Van Overis showed early talent last year, taking equal first in both Addington and Hickstead’s four-year-old championships.

Felix McCartney convincingly claimed both Gents and 1.25m titles on 13-year old chestnut mare Evamore.  A risky gallop to the final vertical paid handsomely on both occasions.

The 13-year-old was purchased for Felix four years ago by his grandmother Margaret Lewes, and the pair, 2012 Wierden under 21 Nations Cup team members, gained recent success on the Spanish Sunshine tour.

Felix is also concentrating on producing youngsters at his new base at Kington Langley Stud in Chippenham, Wiltshire.

A demanding, up-to-height track was won on jumping as riders chose to forgo the clock and focus on clear rounds.  The title was awarded to the well-deserved round of Simon Buckley on the 8 year-old grey gelding Wordsworth II. The big grey, owned jointly by breeder Johanna Gate, showed effortless scope despite his relative inexperience.

“He’s only just out of Foxhunter” said Simon on the Claudio Sunlight gelding, who traces back to Carthago Z.

Anthony Condon used his final draw to ease the scopey grey gelding Cartino III into victory in the Hazelden Saddlery six-year-old. “He’s so lovely to deal with in every way” said Anthony on the Cartano sired grey he has ridden for Kat Taylor since November.

Thirty-two jump-off competitors ensured the NAF 1.20m championship was hot, hot, hot.  But eventual winner Jamie Wingrove found the shortest route on Carole Williams’s 9 year-old bay mare Landor Paparazzi.

“She makes it easy” said Jamie, at his second show with this German nine-year-old, which is now for sale as regular rider Jade Williams continues her work on films as a stunt rider.

Completing the track at an astounding pace, Glynn Slater took the Keith Price Garages 1.10m championship by an amazing three sec on Charlotte Foreman’s 9 year-old grey mare Tubbercurry Lass.

“This is her class and the course suited her, she can gallop and turn” said Glynn, who was favourite to win after heading two of the three qualifiers, and finished second in the other.

Chris Smith landed the Smarter Builders 1.15m title on Spring Equestrian Partnership’s 10 year-old dark bay gelding Wise Boy. “He’s only done three shows after a five month break, and he’s won every time” said Chris, who is aiming to use the Dutch bred 10-year-old as a speed horse at forthcoming International shows.

Taking a flyer to the final water-tray, David Murdoch earned the Deebees 1.05m Welsh Master title on Tamsin Bright’s 11 year-old black mare Lucky Nederland. “The more you dare her, the better she is” said David, 19, who has ridden the British-bred mare by Nederland for only one week.
