BRITISH MASTERS 2014

Stormy showers couldn’t keep the enthusiasm at bay and spectators enjoyed three days of top-class showjumping at the fourth annual British Masters at Cheshire’s South View Equestrian Centre. The sun did come out occasionally, and riders entertained with thrills, spills and hotly contended classes.

The Alexander Horseboxes British Masters Grand Prix was played out to the background of rumbling thunder, but luckily the rain held off to give Ireland’s David Simpson his biggest win.

The British-based Irishman gave his own fairly inexperienced 8 year-old Global Van't Braunerthof a sympathetic, encouraging yet slick ride to commandeer top spot.

“I haven’t pushed him hard against the clock, just turned him up occasionally as he still makes green mistakes, he’s not ready to gallop yet,” said David on the nevertheless impressive Vigo Darsouilles/Landetto gelding.

“The three-round format suited him, I could get him in the ring again, but he’s tired now and ready for the field tomorrow.”

The Belgian-bred chestnut joined David two years ago and finished second in the 2013 Talent Seekers Championship at Horse of the Year Show.

Tina Fletcher claimed second with the big-jumping, powerful Unique IX, with James Hughes and Peiter in third.

Geoff Luckett earned world ranking points with a 1.45m speed victory on Sharon Baldwin and Meadow Stud’s Constant II. “It was a fast course but he’s naturally quick and straight,” said Geoff on the Carinjo/Burggraaf 9 year-old, winner of 2013 Hickstead Grades B and C Championship. “He lacks a more experienced horse in front of him, he’s moving up the levels well, but he’s the forerunner of the young horses and so the pressure is on him.”

Nicole Pavitt headed Friday’s 1.40m speed with Marcela Esnaola’s Our Duchess. The Dutch-bred 10 year-old by Solitair was crowned Welsh Masters champion in April. “She’s naturally quick and careful, I can let her run and jump,” said Nicole.

Guy Williams and his own Belgian-bred 12 year-old Casper De Muze took the accumulator in fine style with a two second advantage. “He’s fast, fresh from a win at Hickstead and the course suited him,” said Guy, who now moves on to the Great Yorkshire Show.

Harriet Nuttall used her penultimate draw on the big-striding Highland Cruiser II to seize the 1.35m speed from long-time leader Laura Renwick’s speedy Beluga.

“I cut inside to the cross-pole oxer, it was the only place I was going to beat Laura [who went round], and he’s naturally quick,” said Harriet, who finished fifth in Hickstead Speed Derby with her father Rupert’s Cougar/Flagmount Diamond 13 year-old.

Laura topped the initial two phase on the Heartbreaker/Darnels bay mare Beluga owned by John Renwick and Marian Renwick. “She’s my banker, so reliable, she wants to win as much as I do,” said Laura, who has picked up recent speed wins in Maubeuge, Hardelot and Lummen with Beluga. “It feels like she’s been with me forever, but she’s only 13, and I’m looking forward to riding her first son next year – a four-year-old by Arko.”

Julie Andrews topped an extremely hot 1.35m jump-off with Eva Bjorkman’s Miss Lyckad. “I don’t think I’ve ever been that fast, in fact, you shouldn’t do this speed at jumps!” said Julie, who landed and kicked to the wavy planks with conviction on the Swedish 11-year-old. “She’s ace – small, powerful and feisty.”

Jo McGlory took the final Sutton Jack Russell 1.40m stakes with her Calido I/Landgraf I 15 year-old Camielo, and Sarah Williams headed the amateur grand prix on the homebred Calvaro Star, a 7 year-old by Calvaro Z out of a Quick Star mare.

Alex Gill was crowned Fairfax Winter JA Classic Champion and claimed a brand new Fairfax saddle with Ammanvalley Santino, owned by Lynn Barker.

“He felt very good in the first round, the bigger the better for him,” said Alex, who found some of the track technical. “From the water to the last double of verticals was our ‘bogey’, but he ballooned it."

Alex, who benefits from his uncle’s advice, International showjumper Paul Barker, is hopeful of European selection with this Welsh-bred 10 year-old. “In the winter he felt the best he’s ever been, and we’ve been building up to that again in these last few weeks, today he peaked.”
