The second class of the day in Championship Arena 1 had an incredible 96 starters and lasted over five hours seeing rider after rider enter the ring to contest the sought after title here at the British Showjumping National Championships 2018. Not letting the pressure get to her, the eventual winner was Niki Mitchell with her mother’s 14 year old gelding, Lucca II. Having been one of just 10 double clears in the class, Niki sped around the jump off like there was no tomorrow, twisting and turning and pushing down to the final fence. She explained afterwards: “I just wanted to go in and smash it!” which she certainly accomplished.
The pair, who have travelled down to the Championships from Manchester, have only been a combination for a year and this is their biggest achievement so far. “I’m so pleased to have won here today. We came to the Championships last year with another pony but this is Lucca’s first time here and he seems to really like it. I hope to one day ride at Horse of the Year Show with him.”
Niki still has the Pony Discovery Final to compete in here tomorrow which she hopes to do just as well with.
