Abi South claimed her first big win in the Equissage Pulse Senior British Novice Second Round at Prestige Equestrian

Abi South will make her debut at the British Showjumping National Championships in August after heading the Equissage Pulse Senior British Novice Second Round on Edentrillick Echo Beach at Prestige Equestrian.

“It was only our second attempt at qualifying and our first major win,” said Abi, who rides the Beach Ball x Cruise On 11-year-old, on loan from friend Jess Kwong, barefoot.

“She fractured her knee as a 4 or 5-year-old and had a lot of time off.  She was tried for breeding but didn’t take so Jess asked me if I fancied riding her.  We tried shoeing her but she went lame so we go barefoot, she wears hoof boots to go hacking, but otherwise, that’s it.  She got better and better so we registered for affiliated jumping last May.”

Twenty-two competitors from the original 30 starters contended the 1m course with 13 supplying double clears to go forward into the jump-off with Abi in the penultimate draw.

“I was originally going for a treble clear, but a friend told me where to save time,” said Abi, who wasn’t convinced as the turn placed her too close to a tight turnback to the next.  ‘Don’t take the fence before at an angle,’ came back the advice.  “I took it on, got the cut through the double; others tried the turn, too, but they had fences down,” said Abi, who works at Meephill Livery in Ledbury, Herefordshire.

“Less if definitely more with her, she doesn’t like a change in routine and she really doesn’t like a bit – she argued too much – so I ride her in a hackamore and she’s happy.”

Charlotte Blewett-Harris eased Zozo Blue into second and Chantal de Vertueil claimed third on Noko.
